Sales & Marketing Manager, Suburban Newspapers of America. 8/6/07 – present. For this trade association of 2400 community newspapers I fulfill numerous tasks that include working with industry vendors to bring to our association as members, conference exhibitors and speakers; creating topics for, soliciting speakers for and hosting various alliance conference calls in the areas of marketplace advertising and Interactive media; hosting/MCing several conferences each year; offering consulting services to newspapers and industry vendors; and reporting on multimedia marketing products, ideas, services and publishers/sites through conference attendance, online research and industry publications. My job tasks are about evenly divided between reporting/writing/editing and working in a sales or consultative capacity with newspapers and industry vendors.
Classified Intelligence, LLC, Writer/Analyst, – January 2002 – August 2007, (3 years contract, 2 years FTE.) For this media consultancy I performed two primary functions. I reported on the “newspaper and newspaper vendor” beat, as a writer for Classified Intelligence Report and Classified Intelligence Case Studies newsletter. As a consultant/analyst I conducted mystery shop “calls” on newspaper advertising phone staff and online ad entry platforms to assess key functions and behavior and report back to client; I assessed customer prospects for industry vendors through product demos and interviews, and evaluated Web and print products with improvement and implementation suggestions.
DeScribe, owner, 1996-present. Freelance writing/editing and advertising copywriting business. For a three-year client I wrote Web articles; I’ve written feature and business management articles for HR.Com, Inside Recruitment and Inside Call Center newsletters, Blue Ridge Business Journal, Retirement Lifestyles in the Carolinas magazine and others; have written marketing fliers, training manuals, job descriptions, direct mail pieces and brochures, speeches and advertising copy. I co-authored “Implementing and Managing Telework: a Guide for Those who Make it Happen,” published by Praeger Press. Nationwide Credit, Inc. 1997-2001. For 3.5 years I worked in various positions in Vestal NY and for a short time in Kennesaw GA. I started in first party collections in Vestal, then moved up to MCI blocking inquiry services where I spent most of my NCI career. I briefly relocated to Kennesaw for third party collections.
Topics Newspapers, Classified Advertising Manager, June 1993-January 1996. For this group of 14 weekly and one daily newspaper I supervised the inside sales staff, created advertising promotions, marketing materials and campaigns, oversaw the implementation of a new classified front-end system, and created and staffed a telemarketing department. I also spent six months making classified and retail outside sales calls.
Chapel Hill News, Classified Supervisor, February 1992-June 1993. For this tri-weekly North Carolina newspaper I oversaw a sales staff of two, made outside advertising sales calls and created promotional and marketing materials and advertisements.
McClatchy Newspapers, 1985-1992. I held various inbound and outbound inside advertising sales positions, both at the Sacramento Bee and the Herald in Rock Hill SC.
