Independent Research Project, NC State University January 2011 - Till Date

Understanding the spatial formation and accumulation of fats, oils and grease deposits in the sewer collection system

• Solely responsible for the construction of a pilot sewer system to study spatial deposition of FOG

• Gained in depth knowledge of the mechanism of FOG formation in the sewer lines

• Conducted experiments using vegetable oil and Linoleic Acid to check for potential deposition in the sewer lines

• Experiments resulted in formation of Calcium based fatty acid solids that adhered onto the pipes and manholes leading to the buildup of solids

• Understood how the different hydraulic configurations could lead to variation in solids formation in the sewer line.

• Troubleshot problems like microbial growth in the manholes and pipes that entered the system through the background water by cleaning the entire storage tank and covering the exposed area with aluminium foil to block out light

• Performed Fourier Transform Infra Red Spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR) in order to confirm that the solids formed in the system were metals salts of Fatty acid

• Performed total solids test based on the Standard Methods Book (Edition 12)

• Performed bench class tests to understand the process of Acidulation of Soap

Research/ Project, Anna University December 2009 - April 2010

• Presented a paper titled “Adsorption of Patent Blue and Acid Red 88 onto surface modified and chemically activated Coconut Shell Charcoal” and presented it in CHEMCON '09 - A National Level Conference held in Vizag, India during December '09.

• Worked on a project titled "Adsorption Studies of Dyes on Nano-Materials and Activated Carbon" as my final year project and was awarded the "Best Undergraduate Project Award" by Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering.
