AREAS OF EXPERTISE
Reliability & qualification testing, and reliability prediction
Defined and managed qualification programmes for processes and components for major space
electronics projects, to customer specifications, including an emergency repair process which saved a
major Com Dev project from defaulting, (Com Dev and MDA)
Defined and carried out solder joint reliability testing on a flip chip on low fired temperature ceramic
assembly. (BreconRidge)
Defined and managed qualification programmes for optical and electronic modules to Telcordia
standards (BreconRidge, Nortel Networks)
Defined and managed a qualification programme for a military product (Active Phase Array Radar
modules) to customer specifications. (Nortel Networks)
Carried out reliability prediction for telecom products to Telcordia SR-332 (BreconRidge, and as a
consultant)
Carried out reliability predictions & reliability testing for thick film hybrids for an airborne application,to Mil.Hdbk.217 (Marconi Avionics)
Failure analysis
Organised the successful failure analysis of products from manufacturing, qualification testing, and the
field, eg:
- Contamination of passive components causing epoxy joint failure. (BreconRidge)
- Die attach failures, due to faulty die processing, two occasions, different root cause. (Nortel
Networks)
- Laser diode failure, traced to contamination during module bake out. (Nortel Networks)
- Optical train failure, due to inappropriate use of epoxy (Nortel Networks)
- Failure of fluxless soldering operation due to inappropriate base metallisation. (Nortel Networks)
- Intermittent failure of contact assembly of sealed X-ray tube. (Marconi Avionics)
Qualified in acoustic microscopy, carried out 90% of department’s work in this area, in incoming
inspection, process quality, and failure analysis. Trained two technicians to do specific acoustic
microscopy inspections. (Nortel Networks)
Defined and managed a study to assess whether a particular silver loaded epoxy would adhere to solder.
(Nortel Networks)
New Product Development and Introduction
Worked on the development of a pilot line for the assembly of laser modules for external sales.
Responsible at this time for process development, line management, some line operations and
documentation. (Nortel Networks)
Managed the transfer of this line to the U.K. facility of Nortel (Paignton), including operator training
and managing the qualification build.
Designed a low cost alternative to the pin grid array package, and set up manufacturing facility for its
assembly. (Nortel Networks)
Introduced new technology where appropriate, eg:
- Acoustic microscopy (Nortel Networks)
- Vapour Phase Reflow Soldering (Marconi Avionics)
Introduced surface mount technology to the company for the assembly of prototype equipment, and
managed the assembly of:
- Prime Fourier Transform Analyser for an airborne application.
- Display drivers for a battlefield radar application.
(Marconi Avionics)
Supplier Quality Engineering/Manufacturing Support
Audited suppliers, and assisted the quality systems department in auditing suppliers. (Nortel, Gennum,
Com Dev)
Qualified new processes at existing suppliers. (Gennum)
Prepared manufacturing documentation, procurement specifications, inspection criteria and other
documentation as required. (Nortel, BreconRidge, Gennum, Com Dev)
Disposed non-conforming material reports, (NCR’s) and raised and resolved supplier corrective action
reports (SCAR’s) when required. (Gennum)
Disposed discrepancy reports (DR’s) raised by inspectors and assembly operators, as required, and participating
in materials review boards (MRB’s) with other engineering functions if necessary. (Com Dev)
Audited sub-contractors’ documentation for three communications satellites. (MDA)
Component Engineering
Established RoHS compliance of family of optical modules (Gennum)
Checked RoHS compliance of components in the Nortel database, finding alternatives where required.
Checked supplier information against Nortel requirements for alleviating tin whiskering
Carried out background research into lead free solder joint reliability to refute Verizon statement that
lead free assemblies were not reliable.
(As consultant to Nortel)
