Encapsulation of Phase Change Materials, Thermal Energy Storage

(August 2010 - Present)

Research targeted to explore the cost effective fabrication techniques of encapsulating the phase change materials (PCMs) using high temperature polymers, etc. and by providing a self-supporting structure and thereby increasing the heat transfer rate in thermal energy storage.

Work involves study of materials behavior and their thermal mechanical and heat transfer properties over a range of thermal storage operating temperatures for sustainable encapsulation. Also, it involves design of experiments for short run fabrication and testing the quality of the encapsulated PCMs.

It includes material development i.e., discovering the novel coating materials which can with stand high temperatures and remain unreactive to molten PCMs and other heat transfer thermo-fluids, developing design for the encapsulation assembly, optimizing manufacturing technologies and quality testing and characterization of the coatings.

Methods for Building Quality Prototypes in SLS Rapid Prototyping Process

(November 2009 - May 2010)

Work involved product design (using Solidworks and Pro-E), fabrication (using RPT process) and quality analysis. It was intended to improve the quality of prototypes by reducing the stair-casing defect, a prominent defect that occurs on surfaces with curvature. Methods for achieving better quality prototypes by utilizing maximum capabilities of design software and the manufacturing unit were investigated.

Study probed into various tool steels and their respective heat treatment processes, tools, tool geometry and properties, and the machinery (lathes, milling, shaping machines, etc.). Comparative study of CNC and conventional lathe was done. Developed a CNC (G) code (FANUC) for manufacturing structural elements and implemented the code to fabricate the desired job.

• Modeled a windmill and performed stress analysis of the windmill arm in Solidworks
