This was done for 3 years and was highly impactful. The goal was to improve community/LEO relationships. It’s still happening!
Established working relationship with KAAAC and AmeriCorps VISTA by connecting additional members with opportunities to serve in the office of the Governor. This opened the door for the “Bridge the Gap” and the “African American Youth Day at the Capitol” to be expanded. Young people were able to work with other young people as mentors in both programs. “Bridge the Gap” youth were trained (by me) to use the Periodic Table of Elements to teach others ANY SKILL/MESSAGE one could think of. In 2013 and 2014, they were invited to present in Washington DC at the National Service- Learning Conference and had the opportunity to present their award-winning presentation before Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. AA Day at the Capitol matched high school and college mentors with middle school students for the day to walk them through the process of how state government works
