In addition to having the general knowledge of a Detention, IPU, and SRT Officer, I am trained as a Special Needs Officer. As a Special Needs Officer, I have the responsibility of tracking and ensuring the wellbeing of inmates with mental illness and those with special needs such as physical disabilities.
As a Special Needs Officer, I generally work remotely from my supervisors and am frequently responsible for making on the spot decisions when it comes to deescalating in a crisis or where best to house inmates. Because of the duty station separation and the frequent transfers of inmates from the Downtown Detention Facility to the Jail Annex having frequent and clear communication with other members of the Special Needs Team and housing officers is critical.
The resolution to honor the Special Needs Unit was proposed by the El Paso County Commissioners Court in November 2017.
The Military Order of the World Wars recognized the Special Needs Unit as Law Enforcement Unit Of The Year in May 2017.
