As site Engineer, my role involves provision of on-site guidance to the contractor and Resident Engineer’s teams on the infrastructure developments currently being undertaken in Tatu Industrial Parks and Kijani Ridge within Tatu City, act as the on-the-ground link between the DCC and Delivery teams to manage clients and any problems they are faced with while undertaking their developments; while also providing hands-on oversight on other Tatu City projects in Ruiru and surrounding areas.

As Clerk of Works, I ensure that the interests of LWF are represented with regards to confirming the quality of both materials and workmanship are in accordance with the design information, specifications and engineering drawings, and quality standards. I undertake preparation of scope of works, specifications, construction drawings, bills of quantities and construction supervision of works carried out by Education team and its partners in Dadaab, Kenya As assistant to Site Agent at Sarit Centre site as part of the contractor’s team, roles included client, consultants and Project Manager engagement, project management, contract management, time and cost estimation, advising on status of valuations as well as cash flow projections for work done on site, Project cost was approximately $50 Million under the Red Book FIDIC contract. By breaking down larger teams managed by a single foreman into smaller teams, I managed to ensure better efficiency and greater attention to details required to adequately complete works on site to specifications. This also led to ease of planning for snag and de-snag inspections, flawless execution of client handover, including receipt of Taking-Over certificate from the client via the Project Manager. This also aided in reduction of labour on site to the numbers required for efficiency and ease of managing large numbers on site. Structural

As Project Engineer and part of a team including four others undertaking an oil and gas-type project, I undertook a design review and thereafter deployed to site for construction supervision of fuel storage yards in support of the MONUSCO mission in the D.R. 400-800 Cubic metres of fuel, with different configurations for Jet A1 fuel and Diesel fuel, the main fuels consumed by the mission. Contract type for this project was Turnkey FIDIC contract.

Because of general poor security in the country that included dusk to dawn curfews which brought limits to construction timelines, I initiated and advocated for use of R-type cement instead of N-type cement, which would allow the concrete to attain concrete strength 2 days after casting instead of the 7 days for N-type concrete. I also encouraged the fabrication of piping materials off-site for quick and easy installation on-site later. These two measures ensured completion and

commencement of operations within 6 months of all works on site, despite a previous delay of at least 3 months. Project costs were approximately $15 Million

As Project and contract manager, I undertook project management duties on behalf of the company with the client and consultants.

Upon joining for this short contract, I produced and ensured the strict adherence to a programme of works detailing the construction of a footing to take the static and dynamic loading due to a thermal power turbine to be relocated from Nairobi to Muhoroni, with key emphasis on deliverables along the critical path, as well as organising for the procurement of the different components, goods and materials required to ensure the success of the civil works as well as ensuring they are to the documented specifications. Project cost was approximately $6 Million.

As Civil/Structural Engineer, site investigation, preliminary and detailed design of reinforced concrete and steel structures as well as associated civil works, preparation of project specifications, bills of quantities and bills of materials, preparation and evaluation of tender documents, design review works among other roles assigned to me.

Complexity of structures designed ranged from simple residential dwellings to multi-storey residential and commercial structures, as well as industrial structures done in steel.

As assistant to Clerk of works, I assisted the Clerk of Works in preparing cost estimates for the future works, supervision, planning for future construction works, as well as labour management. I also undertook preparation and guided evaluation of tender documents for specialist works which 2014

could not be undertaken by the team and labour on site. Due to the size of the structure under construction, we found ourselves with huge volumes of concrete pours (approximately 250 cubic metres per pour at heights not less than 3.5 metres high) which would need to be done in the shortest time possible I researched and presented a proposal to use ready mix concrete supplied by Bamburi Special Products who would supply the concrete and pump it into position, which would eliminate the requirement of having a huge labour team for at least 25 days on site to mix, hoist, and pour the concrete in- situ. Project cost was estimated to be $2.5Million Education
