Early Grade Reading: Transition to English (T2E)

This survey was aimed towards ascertaining the successive transition of pupils learning and reading in their mother tongue to learning and reading in English Language. Where we had to draw our conclusion by comparing the Galop School Profiling against the Non-Galoping School profiling with the ASER tools.(March 2021-June 2021)

Responsibilities/Duties:

Implementation of the project M&E plan.

Training of the project team (Circuit Supervisors [SISOs] and Curriculum Leads) and its Partners on the use of M&E tools(quantitative and qualitative data collection).

Supervision of the collection of good quality data on the project online M&E platforms.

2.Senior Research Associate

Early Grade Reading Assessment, (EGRA)

The main objective of the research study is to assess the impact of an Early Grade Reading program which supports teaching, learning and reading in mother tongue; Ghanaian Language of Instruction. This was a nationwide research in all 10 regions. We derived a concrete outcome from both the intervention schools (Schools benefiting from the program) and the control schools (Schools not benefiting from the program).Ghana Education Service and USAID funded project. (21st April, 2017-30th May 2019)

Job Description:

•Training of newly hired field data collection officers

•Assisted in the modification of already designed questionnaires for the

Research (Survey).

•Preparing working schedules for each member of my team of field workers and ensured that weekly targets were met.

•Lead the research team in the entry of the various communities under the survey which involved the interaction with opinion leaders such as the Chiefs, Assembly Members, District Directors and Unit Committee Members.

•Meeting up daily with Circuit Supervisors and Curriculum Leads who oversee the respective 16 schools to provide them an in-depth explanation of the program in order to obtain an official consent (signed and dated) for a 45minutes to an hour one on one interview.

•Held a daily early morning section before school starts with the respective head teachers of the 16 schools in order to discuss thoroughly the purpose, benefits of the program; how that the data collected would be an evidence-based grounds for the USAID/Ministry of Education to make better decisions in the future. Also, to better explain why some schools are benefiting and others not. After our discussion, an official consent is obtained (signed and dated) before a 45minutes to an hour one on one interview.

•The teacher currently teaching the primary One that have been selected randomly and an official consent is obtained (signed and dated) before he/she is undergoes an observation of a reading lesson and then 45minutes to an hour one on one interview.

•Properly selecting 20 pupils (10 P1 and 10 P2) through mathematical random selection process with the help of an instrument called Dice in order to avoid being bias in selecting.

•I take note during daily debriefing after each day’s work to prepare and strategies for the next day and week.

• Uploading of data collected from field in-depth interviews by field workers onto a server at the end of each working day.

•Writing and chronological filling of reports on weekly field activities.

•Assisted in data cleaning at the end of the research (survey).

The aim of the survey is to measure the incidence of child labour in cocoa production areas in Ghana. This is to ensure that children are not exploited or endangered in the production of cocoa. The results of this survey will enable them to better target awareness campaigns aimed at those affected by child labour.

We were in charge of a team of enumerators and we were supposed to interview minors (5-17) to know the duties been assigned to them by their parents at home.

Interview the parents to ascertain the kind and the level of involvement of their children with respect to duties.

To ascertain if children are been made to go to farm during school hours or been denied basic education because of farm support.

4.Senior Research Associate

Early Grade Mathematics Assessment, EGMA

The main objective of the research study is to assess the impact of pupils’ numeracy outcomes. The purpose of this study is to generate rigorous evidence on the efficacy of the program in order to improve the ability of the Ministry of Education and Ghana Education Services to implement mother tongue policy and improve Numeracy instruction methods in early grade. A comparison of both the intervention schools (Schools benefiting from the program) and the control schools (Schools not benefiting from the program) gave a clear distinction, the better working program would be a choice in future decision. The research was conducted in randomly selected two districts (Shai Osudoku and New Juabeng) and subsample of 60 schools in each district.

Job Description:

•Properly tracking of those(40pupil[20 P1 and 20 P2]) who were assessed at baseline; because most of the schools are in deprived remote areas and very far from their homes, and they hardly come to school, so i have to find a compelling way to make them come to school. A random selection process is done to select pupils to make up to the number (40 Pupils).

•Proper tracking and selection is made to get the teacher currently teaching the designated classes (primary 1 and primary 2) to undergo the assessment. An official consent is obtained (signed and dated) before i take the teacher a math lesson observation (60 minutes) and 45 minutes to an hour one on one interview held.

•Held a discussion with math coaches in the intervention schools to better explain the program to them and obtain (signed and dated) consent for a 45minutes to an hour one on one interview.

•Because we could not meet the parents of the individual pupil, a copy of a letter called the parent information sheet was given to the pupil to give to their parents which i explain in their local language for them better inform their parents and i leave a copy with the head teacher in case any parent coming asking questions.

•I take notes during our Daily debriefing after each day’s work to prepare and strategies for the next day and week.
