WORK EXPERIENCE AND ACHIEVEMENTS

ENGINEERING

Plant Maintenance Management and Planning.

• Team leader of a Thermal Power Station Mechanical Maintenance department. Work involved looking after the Boiler Plant, Turbine Plant and associated equipment. Also included was maintenance of company property; company vehicles and buildings. Ensuring operation and maintenance work meets all statutory requirements.

• Established a vehicle workshop to do in-house maintenance of the latest model fleet of tipper trucks at the time.

• Executed scheduled and condition-based maintenance to ensure maximum plant availability and managed to reduce both maintenance cost and plant downtime by optimizing various maintenance schemes.

• Laying down systems, documentation and processes for maintenance system that is ISO 9001:2015 compliant.

Plant Modifications and Designs.

• Refurbishment, modification and upgrading of obsolete processes and machinery with OEM support.

- Modified Lubricants Bulk Storage Tank System at BP and Shell Blending Oil Plant. 2009

- Replaced obsolete plant equipment like pumps and valves on an on-going process in the plant at ZPC Harare Power Station. 1988 – 1991.

Project Management.

• Participated in project appraisal of mechanical and civil works as well as the tender adjudication. Examples of projects done were:

- Extended the coal feeding conveyor system to supply coal to a further 2 boilers which used to be supplied by an obsolete and unreliable bucket conveyor system.

- Extension of stores

- Installation of fuel tanks at customer sites.

- Worked with CEGB Consultants to establish a plant area coding system for Hwange Power Station and filing system in the maintenance planning office.

- Analysed failure modes of an ore crushing plant and produced a project report with recommendations of reducing maintenance costs and breakdown.

- Major Overhaul of Power Utility Boilers and associated Machinery. 3

• Major Projects Done

- Testing and Commissioning of Zimchem Refineries. Did the insurance and Technical Risk Management of the Project 1993

- Establishment of an Automotive Workshop at ZPC Harare Depot for the Maintenance of Trucks supplied under International funding and maintaining them to OEM standards in terms of the warranty conditions. 1989

- Establishment of a Panel Beating Shop and Reclaimed Vehicle Yard for Zimnat Insurance Company. 1996

- Established Fuel and Lubricants Dispensing systems at workshops for Murowa Diamonds, Unki Mine, Zimplats, Ashanti (Freda Rebecca) Mine, Cottco Harare, Sino Cement Gweru, Zimoco, AMC and several other small customers. 2000 to 2015.

- Major overhaul of ZPC Hwange 220MW U6 Boiler as Chief Engineer. 2017

- Overhaul of ZPC Hwange Stage 1 Boilers ID Fans as Chief Engineer. 2015 to 2020 Production Planning and Control

• Provided lubricants volume forecasts for raw material planning and ordering in line with customer needs and seasonal demand resulting in nearly no stock outs of a product range with over 200 units, for lubricants business that peaked volume at over 12 million litres per year.

• Provided solutions to nonmoving products which included repacking to other sizes or rebranding in line with brand quality standards.

• Consistently monitored production scheduling and advised on adjustment to suit demand and changing patterns.

• During the time of foreign currency shortages spearheaded a toll blending system that produced customer products made from raw materials imported using funds from the same customer we would sale to.

• Led Management of change process on areas of;

- Introduction of new product(s)

- Phasing out of obsolete products.

- Changes in demand profiles.

- Change from stocks driven production scheduling to customer prepaid product raw materials during the times of foreign currency shortage.

- Refurbishment, modification and upgrading of obsolete processes and machinery with OEM support.

INSURANCE

Insurance Marketing, Underwriting and Claims Handling.

• Handled short term insurance marketing, underwriting and claims in all short term business classes with a bias towards engineering, fire, bonds, liabilities, loss of profit and motor insurance.

• Managed to grow the largest engineering reinsurance portfolio in Zimbabwe offering the best support services and training in the insurance.

• Treaty and facultative placements computerization team member.

• Instituted prudent underwriting and claims handling procedures which included rating of panel beating shops, formation of one stop shop for motor claims and synergistic relationships with windscreen companies, car breakers and towing companies, resulting in the loss ratio improving from 90% to 60% plus over 50% growth in premiums.

• All work was underpinned by utmost good faith and ethical conduct.

• Portfolio profitability and overall company performance during my tenure contributed to;

Munich Reinsurance company managing to build Finsure House as joint venture with Founders (now ZB Building Society) and Commercial Union Insurance Company.

Zimnat Insurance being able to buy out Lion Insurance Company and they merged into Zimnat-Lion

Risk Management.

• Advised clients on their insurance risk requirements and this involved risk identification, evaluation, control and financing.

• Implemented Insurance Risk Management principles to clients' business which allowed clients to enjoy premium discounts whilst reducing the claims ratio and resulting in more profitable business and managed to improve non performing portfolios.

• Risk control and loss minimisation measures included recommending and facilitating the procurement of vibration monitoring equipment for turbine machinery, iincentivising clients to institute breakdown and accident prevention measures like conditioned based maintenance, Non Destructive Testing (NDTs), and scheduled inspections.

• Applied the risk management principle to Process Industry, Power Industry, Textile, Agro-based Industries, transport and various other commercial customers.

• Surveyed and managed insurance risks associated with construction and erection projects (e.g. Joina City Multi-storey Building Basement Lateral Support System, Finsure House, Karigamombe, Forestry Chimanimani Sawmill, Zimchem Refineries {new type of technology to be introduced to Zimbabwe mid 1990s}, Biri Dam, Meikles Hotel expansion). All these projects were multi-million dollar projects.

• Applied insurance risk management principles to all insurance portfolios which included manufacturing, power industry, mining, sugar industry, processing plants.

• Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) experience gained at international level in the highly risky petroleum, gas, lubricants and power industry. MARKETING AND PRODUCT SUPPORT

Marketing: Petrochemical Products

• Marketed petrochemical products resulting in lubricants market share for the company increasing from 40% to 80% in a 3 year period, making the company have the largest market share whilst also offering the widest product range and services.

• Business was conducted in a safe, professional and ethical manner to ensure compliance with local and international standards.

• Spearheaded the pilot project in the reintroduction of blended petrol fuel by doing presentations on issues to be addressed.

Technical Services, Tribology and Condition Monitoring

• Main activities were:

- Lubricants and fuels properties and application.

- Lubrication surveys and recommendations.

- Lubrication failure investigation and optimization.

- Oil analysis, diagnosis and conditioned based maintenance.

- Wear analysis and gear inspections.

- Drain intervals and planned maintenance

- Diagnosis of lubrication wears analysis in conjunction with NDTs (like thermography, vibration analysis, etc.)

• Worked with the Chemist to run one of the largest petroleum laboratories in the country at the time offering a wide range of services which included fuel quality testing, used oil analysis, fuel contamination test and disposal, and environmental test.

• Administered a joint Shell and SKF international condition monitoring programme which combine tribology services with NDTs to monitor machinery and equipment condition. The information was then used to implement various maintenance systems which included condition based maintenance.

• Tailor made technical offers to customers to help improve their business, plant availability and cost saving systems.

• Applied tribological services and lubrication to all types of equipment used in manufacturing, transport, earthmoving equipment, mining and agriculture. 5

Petroleum Products Procurement

• Sourced petroleum products for the company and implemented mitigation measures to avoid stock outs in an environment where there was cash constrains and supply challenges, resulting in the company being considered as one of the most reputable and reliable supplier of petroleum products.

• Optimised supply logistics to result in one of the most cost efficient and robust supply chains of the widest range of petroleum products on the country.

• Ensured compliance to requirements of regulatory bodies in the petroleum industry including ZERA and ZIMRA.

• Liaised with International Fuel Traders to come up with best terms for a fuel business of over 150 Million Litres a year.

• Managed stock levels to achieve zero stock pouts nationwide in an environment with limited foreign currency and other resources constrains.

MANAGEMENT ROLES

• Grow an innovative and efficient supplies team for the importation of petroleum products handling business of up to US$10 million a month

• Led Insurance Risk Management Department with professionals in Insurance and Engineering.

• Led Marketing and Technical teams in the petroleum industry resulting in acquisition of one of the best business in the country.

Helped Shabani Mashaba Mines (SMM) to restart production after it went on curatorship by advancing them petroleum products under closely managed terms and conditions.

Managed to retain BP Zimbabwe petroleum commercial business under 2004-2010 high inflationary conditions with CAPEX having been withdrawn and in-house product transfer facility removed.

Gave Petroleum Cost Reduction and Productivity Improvement benefits at customers’ plants and exceptional results were achieved with exporting companies like Rio Tinto, Mimosa, Tongaat Hulett, Cottco, Ashanti and Zimplats. This was after BP Australia had mentored us on Global Standards for Key Account Management principles.

Succeeded in having adequate petroleum products supplied to essential services providers like NRZ and ZESA during a time of product shortage from 2007 to 2010. TRAINING AND MENTORSHIP
