To whom it may concern at Entourage Consulting LLC, I am writing this letter to signify my interest in a strength and conditioning specialist position at your facility. I believe I am qualified for this job because of my 4 years prior experience teaching functional fitness, olympic weightlifting, bodybuilding, and injury prevention in both a group and 1-on-1 setting. I am currently pursuing an associates degree in exercise science at Portland Community College, and plan on completing a bachelor’s degree at PSU. My passion for fitness coaching began in the Cleveland High School weight room. The peer-coaching community was the cornerstone of the program’s success in the face of injury risk and large class sizes. This led me to adopt responsibility and find purpose in helping other people improve their movement. I was able to apply my knowledge of physics (torque, force transfer, mechanical advantage, etc.) to think up a few coaching cues for my friend’s squats, deadlifts, and olympic lifts. To my surprise, they found value in my perspective. This was a rewarding experience and I realized that movement coaching could be an awesome platform for my mechanically oriented brain. At this point, I became obsessed with absorbing knowledge from weightlifting coaches, youtube channels, and academic research to better myself as a coach and athlete. Later on in high school, I mentored the freshman CrossFit class, which eventually led to a coaching position at my teacher’s CrossFit gym and kicked off my career in the industry. Over my four years of coaching, I have always tried to promote longevity; honing in on postural analysis, how certain habits tend to show up in complex movements, and how my clients can use resistance training as a tool to combat pattern overload from work, hobbies, and sport. I have done a great job at my gym of emphasizing the importance of moving well, not just fast. In an effort to get my clients off of the as-many-reps-as-possible mentality and into the as-many-years-as-possible mentality, I proposed and initiated weekly Olympic Weightlifting clinics. These clinics are focused on improving client’s ability to recognize and identify the faults in their olympic lifts, and then ultimately learn drills that will help rebuild habits going forward.
Technical analysis has always been my strong suit, but over the last four years I’ve come to realize that my advice on that front is only as good as the client’s trust. When I was thrown into group fitness as a 17-year-old, gaining the trust of a client base with an average age of 30 was a big challenge for me. It forced me to rethink age, class, credibility, and ultimately reform my confidence as an individual. I have since developed the social and psychological awareness required to gain trust, create buy-in and ultimately nurture lasting behavior change. I am qualified to write and execute resistance training programs for a broad range of needs that will develop higher jumps, faster sprints, and bigger muscles, but also promote better posture, joint health, and a lifetime of physical wellness.
I am fresh into this career and I have a lot to learn, but an equal amount of potential to explore. Entourage Consulting would be an excellent next step for my career. If you feel I would be a good match for your facility, I have attached my resume and look forward to hearing from you soon!
Sincerely,
Jesse
