Film Experience

Documentary Film Student, Fall 2018 – Present

Directed, wrote and produced an original short documentary, “Longing for Hawai‘i” at SLC

Selected to be featured in the 2020 Hawai’i International Film Festival

My film is an origin story about what it means to be a native Hawaiian living on the U.S. mainland. This documentary celebrates family, native Hawaiian traditions and my ‘ohana’s unique role in Hawaiian history in the face of colonial erasure.

Documentary Film Intern, Fair Share Housing Development (FSHD), Summer 2019 – present

Directed, wrote and produced a 20-minute documentary, called “Ethel Lawrence: The Rosa Parks of Affordable Housing” for FSHD. This film tells the story of Ethel Lawrence, the lead plaintiff in the Mount Laurel Doctrine, which is widely considered the most important civil rights decision since Brown v. Board of Education.

Created multiple promotional videos for FSHD, which raised over $7,000 in donations

Video Creator and Virtual Instructor, TechGirlz, Summer 2020-present

Taught a virtual camp about photography, photo editing, marketing and video production to middle schoolers. The photography/editing and marketing portion of the camp is a curriculum that I wrote for TechGirlz, a Philadelphia nonprofit which empowers women in technology, in 2018.

Designed lifestyle website/blog CMeBelieveMe for Carolyn Bender, a top NYC-area event planner

Wrote and managed all online content and social media accounts. Took professional photographs and produced short videos. Carolyn’s Instagram account reached nearly 1900 followers.

Journalist, September 2015 – June 2018

The Bucks County Courier Times, The Intelligencer of Doylestown, PA, and The Burlington County Times of Southern New Jersey

Won a spot on Reality, an award-winning news section written by an elite panel of high school journalists and published in three metro Philadelphia daily newspapers with a combined print circulation of 90,000.

Wrote cover stories, feature articles and opinion pieces on a range of issues including free speech, racism, feminism, Islamophobia, affirmative action, ethics in politics, Hawaiian history and native rights.

A piece I wrote about a native Hawaiian ancestor led to a news spot on Hawaii News Now.
