OBJECTIVE:
Utilize my experience and skills in the medical nutrition field to teach people how to improve their health status through life’s balance and the enjoyment of high quality food, to motivate and encourage people to make small nutritional changes over time to create large impacts in their long-term health status, and to teach adaptive behavioral strategies to assist in maintaining those changes. In addition, I strive to care for and advocate for those with health disparities and those who must deal with inequality or disadvantaged economic circumstances through client-centered care without judgment. MEDICAL NUTRITION WORK EXPERIENCE:
Medical Nutrition Therapist, MM Health and Nutrition Consulting, Bozeman, MT. Specialty: Public Health nutrition education and lifestyle modification for improved health. Nutrition research and education with multi-cultural groups and internationally disadvantaged groups. Nutrition counseling in private practice, communities, institutional settings, and small community hospital dietetics. (1986- present). One-on-one individual nutrition analysis and counseling (2012-present). Skills: Tracked food related illnesses by obtaining family food intake records, perused client’s medical charts to ascertain health status, elicited nutrient profiles of everyday food consumption practices and analyzed nutrient balance and deficits in order to provide individual nutrition counseling to target and improve chronic health concerns.
Licensed Nutrition Consultant to pediatric psychiatric treatment centers, health departments/WIC, school food services (mainland United States and internationally), home health agencies, hospice, retirement centers, rural hospitals, long-term care centers, detention center/jail settings, and health clubs. (1986- 2005).
Skills: Met and interviewed patients, obtained food intake histories, read medical records to understand current health status in regard to individual medical issues, and educated patients regarding strategies to realize better long-term outcomes. Regional Consultant to the Montana Nutrition Education Training (NET) program of the Office of Public Instruction. (1996-98).
Skills: Trained school food service directors around the state of Montana to build healthy breakfast and lunch menus to meet FDA School Food Program requirements, and to develop strategies for improved student health outcomes. Taught the directors how to use a new computerized nutrition monitoring program to comply with federal standards.
President, Montana Dietetic Association. (1991-92) Skills: Direct day-to-day communication and business between the state and national dietetic association, Provide leadership to the various nutrition practice groups around the state, Coalesce and facilitate the state’s nutrition goals (reduce hunger in low-income families by increasing number of applications for free and reduced meals through the federal school food service program, and by educating citizenry to the availability of- and lending assistance in applying for federal food assistance programs), Organize and help plan the annual meeting of the Montana Dietetic Association for the Registered Dietitians licensed in the state. Director, Dietetics Department of 300 bed nursing home and rehabilitation center, Hartford, CT. (1984-85).
Skills: Managed the daily food service workers and meal productivity, participated in daily interdisciplinary team meetings, analyzed the medical findings and labs of each resident in order to provide current nutritional assessment for the plan of care, met with the families of residents to represent their concerns at their loved one’s quarterly review, and educated families and residents on how to strive for a high quality of life. TEACHING-RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:
Substitute Teacher, Bozeman School District (Full time 2006-2020, part-time 1999-02, 2003-04) Belgrade School District (4-6/04, 2006-2020) and rural Gallatin County Schools (2006-08). For the past 14 years, I have taught primarily at the high school level for Bozeman and Belgrade Schools. Job Description: Read and implement plans written by teacher for substitute. Write directions for students on the whiteboard for visual learners while reading the directions aloud for auditory learners. Take attendance and send the list of absent/tardy students to the office. Teach the lesson. Maintain classroom discipline and move the learning process forward. Help students with individual questions in the classroom.
Student Support Teacher, Volunteer Coordinator (2008-09), GED Test Administrator (Spring 2008), Bozeman Adult Learning Center, ages 16 and up Job Description: Greeted new students, oriented them to the layout of the center, and explained rules and policies. Assisted students as they requested help. Broke down large concepts into smaller pieces, and taught smaller instructional components at the individual student level. Most importantly to me, I praised and empowered each student. Many of these students had not had much success with education in the past.
Teaching Assistant in Special Education, Grades 1-8, Monforton School (2004-06). Job Description: Taught math to special needs students one-on-one. Taught a highly functioning autistic student each day in math, reading, and public speaking. Attended all regular education classes with him including physical education, social studies, and science to provide assistance and individualized instruction as needed.

Job Description: Taught language, reading, and math to gifted students. I was a trained volunteer by the PEAKS/GATE program.

Intervention Teacher of Struggling Multi-cultural ESL Readers, 2nd grade, 6 hrs/week, Waiakea Elementary School, Hilo, Hawaii. Independent Study, U. of Hawaii (8-12/02).
Job Description: Worked with young Pacific Islands children and others who were not English speakers, to learn English words, meanings and uses, and worked to empower these students to read English books at grade level. Nordic Ski Instructor, Grades K-2, Bridger Ski Foundation, Bozeman, MT. (2000-02, 2004-07).
Job Description: Taught beginning skiers in the Youth Ski League how to Nordic (cross-country) ski each Saturday morning for 6 weeks. Medical Nutrition Educator, Pacific Health Research Institute, Honolulu, Hawaii. Worked in the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Micronesia (1999-01). Visited patients annually on 4 different atolls over the course of 3 years. Job Description: Lived with local Marshallese families to elicit food intake records and amounts, analyzed the intakes for nutrient balance and deficits, taught adults about the correlation between heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and nutrition, as well as teaching mothers what their nutritional needs were while they were nursing and the nutritional needs of the babies to reduce the high rates of infant mortality, assessed medical records, followed up on each patient’s medical nutritional status from year to year, and taught social, nutritional, and behavioral strategies with individuals to advance their health status.
Adjunct Instructor, Montana State University, Bozeman, Montana, (1/98-5/98). Job Description: Taught graduate and senior level students the Medical Nutrition Therapy capstone course. Wrote lectures, planned lessons and projects, and issued semester grades.
Nutrition Educator, Enewetak-Ujelang Local Government Council, Enewetak Atoll, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, (1990-98). Job Description: Taught nutrition across the life-span to reduce the high rates of infant and maternal mortality, diabetes, and heart disease. Tracked teenage and adult men in their fishing and subsistence gathering pursuits to determine sources of exposure to nuclear contaminants that they ingested through the food chain.
