CONTRIBUTIONS TO DIVERSITY

The Central Valley has a large immigrant population. Being an immigrant myself, I have a good understanding of the challenges faced by the immigrant population. While working with this specific patient population, I have observed several barriers to them getting medical care. These barriers have resulted in striking disparities in the quality of health care and specific medical conditions like obesity, teen pregnancy, tuberculosis, to name a few. I have implemented the 'teach back" technique in my practice which ensures that the directions are correctly understood in a welcoming healthcare environment.

In my interactions with the patients and while teaching residents and students, I always strive to create awareness about cultural sensitivity in dealing with the ethnically and culturally diverse patient population. I encourage students and residents to reflect and respond to patient's varied perspectives values and beliefs.

TEACHING AND MENTORING

I supervise and mentor medical students and residents during their newborn and ward rotations.
