Manicka Priya N, Dr.KodiRanaswamy, “Strength and Compressibility Characteristics of soft clay mixed with bottom ash”, Indian Geotechnical Conference, December 2015 Abstract: Construction of foundation on clayey soil is always a challenging task. In a site with clay soil of low strength, the bearing capacity is low on such sites there is a necessity of improving the soil. An attempt has been made in this research to utilize the by- product from thermal power plant which is bottom ash to study the property of soil randomly mixed with bottom ash. Namely compaction, consolidation and shear strength properties are studied. The tests are done for all mix of soil with bottom ash. There was a noticeable improvement in Strength and consolidation properties of treated soil.

PROJECTS HANDLED

Project title: Shear strength and Consolidation Properties of soft clay mixed with fly ash and bottom ash mixtures

Description: The project involved improvisation of soft clay with by-products from thermal power plant to improvise the shear strength and settlement properties. Duration: Aug ‘15 – Jul ’16 – Implemented when pursuing Masters Team Size: 2

Role: Material collection, Sample preparation, Experiment result interpretation and Final Report preparation

Project title: Feasibility of Coconut Based Bio sorbent for Effluent Treatment Process Description: The project was aimed at finding the efficiency of a by- Product, Coconut copra meal to remove heavy metals like Cadmium and lead by the process of adsorption. The heavy metals were first induced and tested after which a real paint industry effluent were obtained with permission and carefully tested the same. In both the cases the result was successful. Duration: Jun ‘12 – May ’13 – Implemented when pursuing Bachelors Team Size: 5

Role: Sample preparation, Experiment result interpretation, report organisation Project title: Design of Water Treatment Unit with Spatial Variation along the River Coovum Description: The river coovum which was first clean river, which due to man made changes turned in to effluent releasing drainage. An attempt was done to find out the penetration of drainage water on the either side of the river along the length and thus developing a treatment system for affected ground water area. Duration: Dec ’11 – May ‘12 – Implemented when pursuing Bachelors Team Size: 5

Role: Data collection, conducting experiment with the team, Design of plant element INTERNSHIP
