To me, success is working hard to achieve my goals and being satisfied in what I’ve done. My goals for this class are to learn how to apply these skills to my daily life in order to improve myself, my life, and the lives of the people around me. Student success is a very important class and it will lead me in the direction to college success. While looking over the table of contents of the textbook Keys to College Success, I realized the information in this textbook is significant and I can use my knowledge from this material for the rest of my life.

From this course, I hope to succeed academically and socially. I want to obtain a perfect grade point average this semester but what I want more is to increase my knowledge. I want this first semester to tell me if the engineering field is the right path for me and if I want to finish my associate’s degree at Indian River State College.

To achieve my goal to reach success I must build basic skills. Robert Sternberg, a professor and psychologist, discovered that successful people have 20 basic skills in common which I hope to incorporate into my day to day life. Also I need to stay focused on my goal and actively work to achieve it. I also need to seek help from the adults in my life, including my parents, my advisor, and my professors.

My weaknesses are procrastination, lack of interest, and going to school only for grades. These bad habits that diminish my learning didn’t affect my high school success but it did jeopardize what I could have learned. In order to change these behaviors I need to continue to stay focused keep a schedule and go by that to avoid procrastination. I also need to stay engaged in this course which will help me get past these barriers.

While I feel that the SLS1101 topics and chapters are all going to be useful to me this semester, the topics that will benefit me the most are Chapter 10 : Plan for Career Success and Chapter 12: Thriving in a Diverse Global Community. I believe that these chapters will benefit me the most because I want to find my purpose and passion. I also want my passion to positively impact the world on global scale.

If I start to struggle, I have the tools around me in order to get back on track. Not only can I contact my advisor, I can also speak with my parents who both have their degree and who can help me plan. If that is not enough, I can also utilize help from my professors in order to figure out why I’m struggling and how I can tackle whatever challenges I’m facing.

In order to be successful, I not only have to learn the skills in this course; I have to apply them constantly.
