LETHBRIDGE HUMANE SOCIETY SUMMER OF 2018 – SUMMER

OF 2019

Page 2

Familiarized myself with the cats held at the humane society and was able to efficiently see to their needs. In charge of feeding them, giving them water, and cleaning out kennels, involved lots of delegating tasks to other volunteers.

TAX CLINIC MARCH 1ST

– MARCH 29TH

OF 2018

Volunteering at the University of Lethbridge Tax Clinic gave me additional knowledge in working with the UFile program. On top of this it gave me additional basic tax knowledge from answering client’s concerns about their taxes. The Tax clinic took place every Friday of March, each of these days I volunteered 3.5 hours and did an average of 5 tax returns.

Skills

MANAGEMENT

Had to practice management at both the humane society and shoppers drug mart. Volunteering at the humane society is in two-hour shifts, so we must manage our time well between the different tasks that were given, this limited amount of time tests my ability to manage both myself and the priority of tasks.

At shoppers I am a night time supervisor, so I oversee managing the cashiers and any other employees that were currently in the store. As a night supervisor it is my duty to manage the cashiers and make sure they are performing their duties.

COMMUNICATION

At university this skill is very necessary in being effective with other group member when participating in group projects. Communication is especially key when trying to meet with other group member during the week between classes.

In shoppers drug mart communication is also key when night time supervising because often I will have to leave notes for the opening supervisor of the store. Communication is important in these scenarios because the notes must easily convey what I am trying to say while making sense for someone who was not in the store at the time.

At the Humane society communication is also key because while cleaning and organizing through the cats needs I must be able to communicate where I am and what I am currently doing to other volunteers. Since some cats do not get along with other cats its important to know which cat you will be letting out next and to make sure that is okay with the other volunteers in the room. Page 3

LEADERSHIP

During lectures at the university the professors sometimes require students to participate and interact with the class discussions. Displaying leadership during this time means you must be the first one to speak up and interact with the class sometimes.

When working with others in group projects leadership is key when trying to be efficient and getting the project done. You must be able to display leadership to the other group members to give them the confidence and motivation to do their part in the project. TECHNOLOGY

In the accounting program at the university you must work a lot with technology especially excel. Not just by yourself as well you have to be able to work with excel both in an individual and a team setting, working in a team setting on excel is especially difficult because it requires communication and efficiency while multiple people are editing the same sheet.

After working with Excel and Word for many years I am proficient with both of these and am able to perform tasks quickly and efficiently.

TEAMWORK

At the university you get put into teams quite often in all the classes and without good teamwork skills the team tends to fail being efficient in completing the task at hand, which could eventually lead the team into a variety of struggles.

In shoppers drug mart if you’re not able to work in a team your work day goes by very slow. When doing your duties at shoppers a lot of the time there is more than enough opportunity to do your task with the help of others; however, if you inefficient at team work the task time is doubled since you are trying to do the task and trying to balance with another person while doing the task. The humane society requires a lot of teamwork, to take care of all the cats by yourself it usually takes around four hours of time but doing it with another volunteer is much easier especially when you can efficiently work with the other volunteer in creating a system on how to do things.
