Assist in assessing the patient immediately after surgery to determine his pain-management needs. Depending upon the severity of the surgical procedure, each patient will have different requirements for pain management and care. Address these immediately with the orthopedic surgeon.
Prepare the patient's pain-management schedule and ensure that he receives his medication on time based on the doctor's prescription.
Orthopedic surgeries are extremely painful; a post-operative nurse must ensure that the patient receives the correct dosage at the correct time. Ensure that the patient does not have any allergies or aversions to any pain- management medication and always be aware of medications that should not be taken together.
Check for common conditions following traumatic events, such as compartment syndrome, fat embolism syndrome and hypovolemic shock.
