ACADEMIC PROJECT

PROJECT: APPLICATION OF ECO FRIENDLY RC JACKET MADE UP OF SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS FOR RETROFITTING OF DAMAGED RC BEAMS

Partially Funded by Karnataka state council for science and technology (KSCST), Indian Institute of science, Bengaluru – 560012.

Description: In this work, retrofitting of damaged RC beams having rectangular cross section has been adopted and RC jacketing technique of retrofitting is considered. The RC jacketing considered in this work is made up of eco-friendly and sustainable materials. In the RC jacket, the eco-friendly materials used are fly ash (class F) and ground granulated blast furnace slag(GGBS), used as partial replacement of cement, and the sustainable material adopted is reused reinforcing steel that is in intact condition, obtained from demolition waste of old demolished RC buildings. Fly ash (class F), GGBS adopted as partial replacement to cement and reused reinforcing steel rebar’s are all used in self-compacting concrete in the RC jacket that is cast around damaged RC beams. M sand is also been used in making the self-compacting concrete which is having lesser cost when compared to river sand giving the same concrete compressive strength. In this work an initiative is taken to make effective use of materials such as fly ash, GGBS to enhance the load carrying capacity of damaged RC beams and to obtain enhanced load carrying capacity of damaged RC beams at value a little more than its original load carrying capacity and to also reduce the overall effective cost of the retrofits. The RC jacket thus cast has an appreciable thermal resistance in the event of a fire. The use of fly ash and GGBS which are by products, have low cost and have less environmental impact, such an RC jacket is more eco-friendly in retrofit applications in the society.
