Senior Oracle DBA / Architect - State Of California (Dept. Of Water Resources) – Sacramento – April 2011 – Nov 2013
The last 1.5 years (of more than 2.5 years on contract), I was part of a good-sized team during the full life cycle, design, development, QA and production rollout of a multi-TB Data Warehouse / Data Mart / Business Intelligence solution for power and water scheduling and costs. Performing architectural, development and DBA related tasks, analysis, data mart design (star and snow flake schemas, End User Data Mart view definitions, partitioning, local partition indexes, statistics gathering etc.). I was also the sole APEX Developer 4.2 supporting DW reporting using, Windows 2008 Server, Oracle 11g, OS and database respectively.
Apex requires a decent knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript, which I’ve been doing at an intermediate level for many years. The opportunity to do Apex Development here at DWR has again significantly enhanced my web developments skills. Also, acted as the provisioner / installer / configuration manager and administrator for the Oracle APEX product in all life cycle environments.
Performed as a full-time production DBA for the first year of engagement and on demand throughout the entire Client commitment (more than 2.5 years). Executed database administration, and middle tier administration, architecture definition (hardware and software), installs, new COTS implementations, upgrades, DR, and technical documentation activities required to support the state of California Dept of Water Resources.

Performed DBA and Development tasks with 11g Oracle Enterprise Manager, Toad 10X+, and many windows command line and Windows based utilities (.e.g. DOS Command, RegEdit, Services manipulation etc, VBScript, WScript. The state of CA DWR is a Windows only shop, so all work was performed on Windows Server 2008 R2, 2003 R2 – Dev an some QA instances were VM’d – all Dell and EMC hardware. Performed OEM 10g and Weblogic 11g provisioning and administration.
Revamped RMAN backups to improve recovery reliability and space utilization by implementing redundant target and incremental backup strategies. Performed day to day production DBA tasks and DBA support of QA and third party Development groups.
Bank Of America - Los Angeles, CA - Senior Architect DBA and Developer August 2010 – April 2011
Responsible for database administration, architecture and detailed design, implementation, and technical documentation activities required to support the mortgaging side of Bank Of America. More specifically, supporting imaging and content management environments, addressing very large (multi-terabytes with thousands of concurrent connections) Oracle / Documentum based OLTP and Decision Support RAC databases on very large IBM P-Series / AIX and EMC Symmetrix based hardware based systems.
Company is in the midst of an extremely large systems merger as a result of Country Wide and Bank of America merger / acquisition - complicating IT activities.
My strategic directive was enhancement of stability and scalability. Day to day roles, projects and tasks included Streams support for OLTP to dedicated Reporting replication. I also performed extensive DB performance tuning using ADDM, AWRs, SQL Tuning Sets and tuning advisors, connection, and PL/SQL tuning. Aided in design and review of various database migration projects to enhance scalability and stability.
Performed assessments, recommended and implemented architectural changes and smaller enhancements to both hardware and proprietary software running in very active / high concurrency, high volume Oracle RAC environments. Systems were AIX based, Oracle 11gR2 and 10gR2 RAC using Toad and Oracle Grid / Enterprise Manager, and other industry standard tools to sustain and enhance large fairly complex SDLC environments.
Client name left out to protect their interests – may be disclosed with NDA to interested parties – Technical Lead, Linux Administrator and Oracle DBA Administrator - 2006 to 2014 part-time
Analyzed Clients hardware needs and supplied / procured and setup (either myself and or coordinated) all Dell Server hardware (servers and disk arrays). This has swelled to about 6 Dell PowerEdge Servers and 2 drive arrays over the years) to support the Clients growing business and IT demands. More specifically, I have ported and upgraded Oracle and Redhat Linux to a new Dell 2950 production server used to run the company’s main application (a shipping & warehouse management database and application server). Upgraded from Oracle 8i to 10g R2 RAC (standard edition) and upgraded Redhat Linux 2.1 AS to Redhat Linux 4.3 AS and setup RMAN database backups.
2010-2013 Setup a hybrid backup, DR (disaster recovery) and BI reporting server running Linux 5.0 CentOS and Oracle 10g R2 Standard Edition (developed a proprietary failover so the Client had real-time reporting but did not have to pay for Enterprise features – saving the client hundreds of thousands of upgraded production box to Linux 5.
2014 & 2016 – Implemented and supporting Oracle Data Guard for DR and some reporting using Oracle 11gR2. Upgraded RHEL to 6.6 and then to 6.8. Installed and administrated MySQL databases for small proprietary DBs on RHEL 6.6.
Installed Business Objects Enterprise Server XI in a Windows 2003 Server environment specifically for the Crystal Reports Server XI scheduling, and email feature. Ported all Crystal Reports 8.5 reports to XI.
Tuned the production Oracle instance to take advantage of new 10g R2 functionality, PGA aggregate target (instead of sort area size per process), automatic undo (instead of traditional rollback segments), converted to cost based optimization, spfiles, flash recovery and RMAN etc.
Tuned the SGA/buffer cache, shared pool, log buffers, and redo-logs to fit the Client’s load. Generally the buffer cache, log buffers, and redologs were under sized even for the old production box. We upped the allocated resources significantly resulting in significant increases in execution ceilings.
Developed technical documentation for all of the existing systems. Upgraded Client Oracle DBMS this time from 10gR2 to 11gR2 RAC using GNS based SCAN (Single Client Access Name) load balancing listener.
State Of Florida - Senior Architect DBA and Developer Dec 2007 to Dec 2010
Responsible for architecture and detailed design, implementation, administration, development, technical documentation and database activities required to port the Lottery’s large Claims and Pay (OLTP based) system from VMS / Cobol to AIX / Oracle database 10gR2 & 11gR2 and App Server AS10g.
Developed completely new relational design / data model / schema (logical and physical) to enable major improvements in encryption, security, performance, data integrity and functionality. The end result is about a 75 table relational design with full primary key and referential integrity, providing in almost all instances sub-second response to an end user community of about 150 concurrent user statewide. We architected the system such that the current system, future interfaces and extensions are all data driven providing flexibility and great extensibility to a rapidly changing and growing profit center for the state. Project rolled out into production on time and under budget Jan 8th, 2010.
Designed and lead developers in migrating historic data out of the legacy into the newer normalized design (approximately 20GB of condensed data). I designed, developed (a series of PL/SQL packages and Unix scripts) and performed the go live migration of all of this mission critical claims and pay data for the legacy system on Jan 8th 2010. Taking 15 years or so of Florida Lottery claims and pay data from about 25 DEC RDB tables and normalized them into a 75 table Oracle 10gR2 AIX based DB/schema.
Lead Development of Oracle based middle tier applications using Apex, PL/SQL & Oracle Forms & Reports tools for the mission critical interfaces (validate claims etc.). The system is made up of about 30 forms, several SOA components/interfaces of varying complexity – some very complex; Apex and Oracle Reports, plus a Webi Universe for the DW component; a few hundred GB database total space; about 75 tables in the DDL; many foreign key and primary key constraints and a few miles of PL/SQL (package based development, using a wide variety of industry common and advanced PL/SQL features). In fact, 90 percent of the database design of which I was the principle Designer, has complete referential integrity built-in using primary key and referential constraints in a standardized fashion throughout.
Performed many of the production and all of the development Oracle DBA activities and many AIX & Linux Admin functions in the development rollout cycle. Aided with the development, configuration and testing of a Data Guard switch and failover environment for the mission critical Pay and Claim application we architected.
Principle on the following mission critical sub-system: Ported, re-designed and implemented real time socket to socket communications application written in Pro*C & C and PL/SQL to validate winning tickets between major state gaming vendor and the state. This involved porting the client side of the socket interface to AIX – C based, linking it into Oracle as a new listener (Oracle Pro*C based external Oracle procedure) and interfacing that to PL/SQL – which ultimately was called from an Oracle Forms 10g GUI. Involved a thorough knowledge of real-time sockets API from C, Pro*C, AIX compliers and linkers and Oracle’s external procedures protocol.
Data 911, Alameda, CA – Senior Oracle Consultant (Part-Time) January 2006 thru Aug 2008
Ported and rolled out Data911’s commercial product to Redhat Enterprise Linux 4.5 on Oracle 10g R2 (10.2.0.3) RAC. Performed ALL administrative and installation activities for both Linux and Oracle 10g RAC, including shared disk array administration, OS install, clusterware install, Oracle RAC install, patching, backup installation and setup at both the database level (RMAN) and OS levels. Worked with a team of Data911 personnel on QA of the product before a go live at one of their largest clients.
Hardware environment for the RAC installation above consists of a pair of Dell PowerEdge 2950s and a Dell MD3000 array for shared storage to support the Linux Oracle RAC cluster as well as a training node. Was instrumental in the choice of hardware at all levels to cost effectively fit the Client’s needs. Installation uses ASM and OCFS2 for shared storage. Gained extensive experience with RAC Database control, srvctl, oifcfg, crsctl and the entire RAC installation. Also setup development Oracle RAC 10g development environments in Data911 and my office using Dell PE 2850s and PowerVault 220s.
The Client’s standard platform is Windows 2000 and 2003 Advanced Server / Dell servers. In the Microsoft environment I installed 9i R2 9.2.0.4, patched the databases to the latest 9i R2 release 9.2.0.7. Installed 10g R2 10.2.0.1 and patched to 10.2.0.4. Upgrade 8i databases to 9i and 10g participated in the process of certifying Data911’s commercial product line with the 9i R2 and 10g R2 databases. Documented the upgrade process from the DBA perspective from 8i to 9i and 10g. Porting COTS dispatching product to 10gR2 RAC Standard Edition to undergo a comprehensive certification process to support Clients that desire a cost effective HA solution.
Tuned the instances to take advantage of new 9i R2 and some 10g functionality and other features that the Client had not yet implemented including, PGA_AGGREGATE_TARGET, automatic undo, converted to cost based optimization, automated statistics gathering and implemented some table monitoring for statistics gathering, external tables, spfiles, RMAN and Flashback technology,
Documented and trained DBA staff in 9.2 DBA Administration and Developers in 9.2 features for Developers.
Performed extensive analysis of Data 911’s Client’s production environment, identified and tuned application SQL that blatantly needed tuning using tkprof and explain plans, Statspack etc.
Gained extensive experience administrating Oracle in a Windows Advanced Server environment. Performed DB cloning and refreshes using hot and cold backups from many different production environments to development and QA databases to support development and QA groups. Expanded knowledge of Windows registry entries for 8i, 9i and 10g and obtained a thorough knowledge of service creation and service startup intricacies.
Implemented another cost effective failover architecture for one of the Data911 Client’s. Put a high speed dedicated network segment from production to failover in place to facilitate a quick transfer; setup read only synchronized shares from production to failover, documented and tested the complete failover scenario, made the process generic.
Florida Lottery (State Government) as a Senior Oracle Architect / Consultant. (August 2003 – Dec. 2005)
2005 Developed a new logical design and implemented a new physical data warehouse to support the new vendor attributes in the reporting / data warehouse environment afterwards (approximately 2 TB). Used materialized views with a combination of fast and full refreshes to maintain warehouse synchronization. Implemented with Oracle Designer for Logical ERD development and Visio to document and communicate relatively sophisticated data and process flow from and to many different entities supplying financial, product and retailer information. Also created materialized views to rollup sales fact tables to support diverse reporting requirements. Designed time, product, and retailer dimensions entities to support the sales fact tables. Exposure to Business Object universes that provided end user reporting capabilities from the warehouse. Tuned the OS, database level init.ora parameters, indexing, partitioning and SQL to optimize performance, implemented on AIX 5L2 and Oracle 9iR2 DB versions.
2005 – Co-project lead with a state employee on the migration of all of the Florida state Lottery’s IBM MVS legacy systems to Oracle 10g / AIX – designed an out of the box staging and ELT process to comply upcoming new vendor contract and Data Warehouse feeds.
More specifically, I was instrumental with providing the Design, Architecture and leadership/mentored a team of about eight full time IT personnel (and 10 or so more part-time) on a project that implemented all new interfaces and translations to existing Lottery legacy systems to support the introduction of a completely new gaming vendor (i.e. the Florida Lottery contracts out the all terminal activity at the retailers site) for all Lottery games (online and instant). For the first time at the FLA Lottery, AIX and Oracle are being used to support all ETL activities between the gaming vendor and the Lottery (previously it was VMS and MVS legacy systems).
Used standard Oracle 9i DB, Oracle’s development tools and languages for the conversion (SQL, SQLPlus, SQL*Loader, PL/SQL) and UNIX Korn Shell) and Tivoli Scheduler on AIX.
The translation system supported the new data warehouse by maintaining the mainframe legacy pass through of data to the Data Warehouse. The proprietary database design I architected for the ETL processes saved time and money. Zero state funds were spent on COTs ETL software and the design was such that practically no legacy software required modifications. The architecture included robust and thorough audit trails, error logging and recovery mechanisms. The project was executed from concept to production in less than 6 months. Used Tivoli Workload Scheduler for scheduling and job control. Toad was used to facilitate the Oracle component development along with Oracle EM and some Oracle Forms and Java Swing based user interfaces. Again Oracle Designer and Visio were used for logical design, communication and documentation purposes.
2003 / 2004 - Provided assistance designing a 9iAS deployment architecture, installed Oracle 9iAS R2 on AIX and Linux, configured OC4J Forms & Reports Services. Deployed J2EE JSPs, ported / redeveloped legacy text based applications. to Forms 9i (9iDS) and trained Development and Operations/Administration in the use of development and administration of 9i R2 database 9iAS and 9iDS. Worked in AIX 5 / 4.3.x and Windows XP environments. Upgraded to 10G AS spring 2004. Performed all Redhat Enterprise (3.0 and 4.0) / Linux Administration, including installs / kickstarts, disk volume management, upgrades, backups, networking config, security etc.
2003 / 2004 Re-engineered data warehouse to increase performance and ease maintenance. Used tkprof and explain plan to optimize index generation and understand optimization opportunities. Converted global indices to local (to ease maintenance and improve performance). Automated future partition creation (to ease maintenance) and optimized granularity of partitioning
