Tasks included price and contract term negotiation, future milestones, and joint marketing projects for visibility. Over 26 years’ experience with managing data centers running IBM Mainframes, Oracle, HPUX, Red hat, Ubuntu, UnixWare Linux and Windows using EMC, Clarion, and HP Storage solutions. Successfully managed 10 IT costs centers with a total of 28 IT professionals.

Actively working with Gallagher Bassett since 2012 on managing all the GAB Robins Legacy claims systems for WC, P&C, and all lines include auto, marine, and Cat. Also, responsible for all Legacy systems client requests for BI reporting using Cognos and SQR reporting. Responsible for the technical setup, operation, and training of Chubb Services branches that was just acquired by Gallagher Bassett.

The EYEAdvisor application was regarded as the most sought after software by the insurance industry for WC and PC claims as stated yearly at the RIMS convention. This involved hands on work with the Oracle 10g Web Server that uses Apache with embedded Oracle extensions, DBA work on eight Oracle databases that totaled 10 TB, Perl and Shell scripting, IIS/ASP/Apache for web hosting, HPUX for DNS resolution and Sendmail for SMTP, HPUX/SAM for server administration, HPUX/NFS for cross platform storage management on an EMC Array, and we used a Windows/Radius server solution for LDAP authentication.

Member of a corporate senior IT management team responsible for migrating insurance claims data from an HPUX/Oracle opens systems environment to a Tandem/SQL server environment. This effort involved event planning sessions, cost benefit analysis, hands on coding, migration strategies, capacity planning and building an automated FTP interface that would between the systems.

Develop, Track, and control the technical services annual operation and capital budgets for purchasing, staffing and operations. This would also include preparing all field related technical expenditures for software, hardware, internet circuit charges and internet security, landline and mobile networks, and all 3rd party technical resources.

Carrying out road map for employee development plans on a regular basis to ensure employees receive appraisals, motivation, realistic goals, promotions and constructive criticism. In charge of budget planning to provide sufficient employee training/education. Biggest accomplishment: Low staff turnover (in 24 years only five people decided to move to a different company).

Successfully completed large scale projects involving technology related due diligence tasks associated with mergers and acquisitions. This involved cross departmental interaction with Legal, Finance, HR, and 3rd party consulting companies resulting in final recommendations presented to board members. New acquisition then would be migrated to the core claims systems as acquired resources would be trained, branches would be setup with new hardware and network connectivity, and special branch codes would be assigned for acquired claims.

Manage IT departments operational and strategic planning, including business requirements, project planning, and organizing and negotiating the allocation of resources. Reviews all hardware and software acquisitions and maintenance contracts soliciting involvement and participation of other management team members as appropriate.

Responsible for leading multiple large scale migration projects for internal and external customers that are domestic and international. Managed and hands on with all SAN/NAS technologies using HP JBOD disks and EVA storage, EMC Arrays and EMC Software like Power Path, Time Finder Clone, and SRDF. Managed EMC support services and negotiated all EMC lease agreements for capacity planning and cost analysis. Worked with the EMC engineers in performance tuning the Oracle Database by strategically pinning indexes on solid state storage and moving tables to higher performing disks.

Successfully created a new Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP) utilizing an ATT hot site located in Lynnwood WA. This hot site contained a copy of our production environment and updated the Oracle Data Bases by sending Oracle Archive logs over the network every half hour and running the D/R Oracle database in constant recover mode. Incorporated the sending of a copy of all code changes into our change control process, as new code was promoted to production a copy of the new code was sent over to the D/R site. We also maintained Wintell housed documents using DFS services.

Spearheaded technical teams to perform system modifications to successfully integrate with the State of Connecticut’s Workman Compensation Claims system. Modifications included Oracle Web Services system upgrades to adapt to later versions of java, HPUX capacity planning resulting in kernel tuning and RAM upgrades, Oracle database table and stored procedure modifications, network changes to allow for interfaces system integration, production batch scheduling for updating the daily data warehouse, and creating Cognos cubes and reports for customer reporting.

Managed and administered a profile based user id system for the core business applications, remote access, and email mailboxes. This effort was in conjunction with the Active Directory rollout as specific roles where given to individuals based on their job function and security clearance.

Spearheaded a project for upgrading a single Cognos Version 8 environment to a multi node Cognos Version 10 environment. This upgrade boosted performance by 40 percent allowing faster SLA’s to the customers.

Actively managed a Global ATG Ecommerce like environment for managing insurance claim related transactions using home grown Oracle Forms applications severed by the Oracle web server suite of products housed on an HPUX environment running the Oracle RDBMS database on EMC Storage.

Responsible for creating a web based portal for allowing GAB independent adjusters to use the ACIS Claims system via BOYD for handling the FEMA claims in Cerra Grande New Mexico. This involved internet security upgrades, remote client’s windows update and virus protection validation, and Java upgrades. We successfully handled thousands of Property Claims that where a result of this massive fire.

Responsible for creating an enterprise wide backup solution using FDR’s file archiving with recall. This was the beginning of the “virtual tape” concept. Archived files that resided on tape where recalled when the cataloged entry was touched. Files where restored to DASD via an ATL by Memorex that held 2,000 3480 tapes and utilized 8 tape drives. On the open systems environments, I used a Spectralogic 20,000 Gator with 8 AIT4 drives and 200 slots and we used a backup solution called Netvault from Bakbone Software. This new backup solution was much faster as they used Fiber Channel for local servers and Gigabyte Ethernet for network backups. On the Wintel Servers, we used CA Arcserve.

Configured enterprise wide SMTP Email gateways using Sendmail 8.9.3 running on HPUX 11.11 V1. Also included with this install was the first ever production implementation of TLS used for sending mail with an extra layer of security. Addition features included Black lists, Spam filtering, Relay checking, message size checking, Aliases usage and a host of other standard features.

Used VMWare technologies for creating multiple desktop images for testing and supporting over 3,000 laptops and desktops in the field. Spearheaded projects using VMWare solutions to virtualize all our enterprise wide open systems and Wintell server environments for space and cost savings. VMWare was part of our current disaster recovery plan as images were sent across the network to our hot site. Extensively used VMWare View (VDI) after the acquisition of Chubb Claims services. Chubb employees would access Chubb applications like Claimview and Lotus Notes via VDI from non-Chubb branches.

Incorporated IT risks and analysis policies for all IT related functions for the corporate office and branch operations using FMEA, Failure Mode Effects Analysis, like procedures. Results of this effort is seen in the 100 % availability of all systems and branch operations.

Partnered with the IBM Mainframe outsourcing team to help with cost reduction by reducing hardware and maintenance fees, as well as managing service level agreements and capacity planning. This involved lifting the IBM 3084 with all the peripheral equipment and moving it to the Midwest, installing a channel extender from the corporate office out to the new data center, creating new I/O generations for the new storage, SNA/TCPIP installations and setup, testing and user acceptance.

Accountable for managing the Wide Area Network (WAN) domestically and internationally for 69 countries. Saved $1,300,000 a year by moving off of an older frame relay network to a MPLS / VPN network with SSL / VPN remote connectivity.

Spearheaded a team to migrate a Dunn and Bradstreet mainframe financial application over to Oracle Financials. This involved partnering with the financial departments, creating a plan and a budget, acquiring resources and presenting to senior management.

Successfully managed all vendor related contracts and license agreements. One note worthy outcome is with Oracle Database software where I was able to migrate an Oracle named license agreement to a server based license agreement that gave the company perpetual rights to the software and also saving the company approximately $1,000,000.

Successful in managing teams to achieve zero exceptions in the monthly SAS70 audits and also completed the ISO certification. Achieved success in all audits by vendors like Oracle, IBM, and Microsoft resulting in zero addition dollars due to inadequate licensing.

GAB Robins Parsippany, NJ Assistant Vice President, Systems Technology 1999 - 2007

Effectively functioned as Assistant Vice President, Systems Technology accountable for managing a Quality Assurance department resulting in little or no system related downtime due to production promotions, and passed all SAS70 audits. Managed and motivated 16 full time contractors (FTC), database administrators (DBA), and Unix System Administrators in a 24x7 operation. Managed a multi-million-dollar budget that included hardware depreciation, leasing schedules, leasing buy outs, Microsoft licenses, personnel costs, and building leasehold improvements, and was responsible for writing all of the company’s technical guidelines for budgeting purposes.

Successfully managed and centralized all domestic POTS phone lines that were currently owned by multiple vendors to one vender to save over $100,000 a year. This cost reduction was attributed to volume discounts and replacing POTS line service with PRI’s, VOIP solution where applicable, volume discounts where applicable, and extensive knowledge of FCC regulations and charges.

Responsible for migrating 5 EMC Symmetrix Arrays that used SCSI host buss adaptors over to a single 50 TB EMC 3330 3 bay Array that used Fibre Channel host buss adaptors. This involved upgrading 10 HPUX servers to FC HBA’s, addition of virtual drives from the new EMC 3330 via target and luns to the HPUX OS, using LVEXTEND to add the new virtual drives to the HPUX OS, using LVMOVE to move the data over to the new drives, and finally using LVREDUCE to remove the older SCSI drives. To increase performance to the production system I used 4 paths over Fibre Channel to each drive being optimized by EMC’s Power Path. This allowed for load balancing over the 4 paths and allowed for load switching in case of a path failure.

Effectively led an infrastructure upgrade utilizing refurbished HPUX Hardware with later versions of HPUX and Oracle RDBMS that resulted in our month end production schedule running 24 hours instead of 14 days. This upgrade also provided better response times for the Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) users running an Oracle forms 10G application.

Successfully created three physically separated data center work environments for Development, Quality, and Production. Created shell scripts that would compile source code, and store version numbers using native SCCS, on the development environment along with including the documentation about the source code. Addition scripting on the Quality environment that would pull the source code, with the documentation, and recompile on the Quality environment. Once quality testing was complete and ready for production the responsible party for the change will discuss it at the daily change control meeting along with all members of the Technology dept. On approval from all parties the change was scheduled after online hours and before the batch cycle starts. If the change fails, the scripting will automatically email the person on call with the error. Having three separate and distinct physical environments always was a positive on any audit.

Installed and managed Cognos users via a Sun One Directory server on HPUX. This LDAP database was used to manage all the Cognos users across the enterprise and all the rights associated with the user. This was very useful in configuring customers as they only receive features based on their contracted agreement.

Completed a Windows 3.1 to Windows NT upgrade to 2000 clients throughout North America. This involved creating only two images that would work on many different desktops and laptops configurations, scheduling 5 FTC’s to various locations with their respective regions to work on the upgrade and train users on the new operating system.

Built a very secure Wide Area Network using a vendor named Virtela Communications that included network security via IPS devices, websence devices, Cisco PIX Firewalls, and MXlogic for Internet Email defense and Internet Email Spam Filtering. Remote users would use the F5 client that would create an encrypted tunnel to one of the 5 secure POPS in North America that sit on the company’s backbone.

Managed a migration project to move 2,000 users off of a Windows NT domain structure to a Windows 2003 Active Directory structure. This was completed successfully over a nine-month period without any outside consultants resulting in low budgetary costs and high user manageability. The result was having over 2,000 users being managed by different functional OU’s that were defined via location and job function.

This involved the installation of HP Cluster Manager, HP Shared Logical Volume Manager, and Oracle Data Lock Manager. This configuration was first built and tested at the HP Benchmark Center in Paramus with the help of Hewlett Packard (HP) and Oracle, as this was beta version of HP and Oracle. Jeff Lippe from HP performed all performance stats resulting in 100% scalability and throughput. This was the first ever successful production implementation in the world.

Successfully created a Disaster Recovery (DR) site at one of our existing branches with an HP T600, EMC storage, and the Spectralogic 10, tape libraries. Created a forward recover scenario by sending Oracle Archive logs over the network every half hour and running the D/R Oracle database in recover mode. Incorporated the sending of a copy of all code changes over the network to the DR site.

Successfully reduced mainframe operating costs by using an outsourcer to house the IBM mainframe. Cost reductions where seen from IBM support, air conditioning and electric, building square footage, reduction in force, and licensing.

GAB Robins Parsippany, NJ

Senior UNIX/MAINFRAME System Administrator 1990 - 1996

Effectively migrated an in-house insurance claims handling application hosted on an IBM 3084 mainframe running CICS / MVS to a Hewlett Packard open systems HPUX environment with an Oracle database. This involved migrating all the batch reports that ran on Zeek to a UNIX based scheduling product called SQL Operator, migrating off of SNA to TCPIP, and using Ethernet instead of Token Ring.

Statigized on mainframe operations resulting on installing an Automated Tape Library that replaced 3480 stand alone tape drives, using solid state DASD to house IMS database indexes for faster access to data, using FDR Archiving with recall to same on DASD allocation.
