‘Identity, Language, Militancy: the question of origins in the poetry and prose of Tristan Tzara and Mário de Andrade’ (supervised by Emeritus Professor Timothy Mathews and Professor Stephen Hart)

My thesis offers a comparison between specific works by Romanian Jewish poet, later naturalized French citizen, Tristan Tzara and Mário de Andrade, the Brazilian poet, writer and musicologist mixed in order to synthetize their contribution to oral language traditions and to the body of Modernism. Both researched oral language traditions and adapted ethnopoetics to their worktheir prose both were inspired by folk elements. Concurrently, prompted by the historical and sociopolitical events of the late 1930s, they went on to developed militant poetics. I show that their cultural backgrounds along with their cultural understanding led them to employ oral language narratives in their own work as well as active criticiscultural imperialism.

My PhD research is part of the Documentary-Track PhD programme of UCL and includes a documentary film entitled “The Journeys of Mário and Tzara”
