Hospira, A Pfizer Company, Lake Forrest, IL 2015-Present
Electrical Engineer - Contractor
Conducted root cause analysis on pressure sensor circuits. Redesigned
electronics to facilitate increased robustness, increased accuracy,
increased manufacturing yields, and reduced manufacturing time and costs.
Redesign includes, analog circuit design, simulations, analysis, PCB and
flex layout, proof of concept, prototyping, testing, and documentation in a
fast paced environment. The new design saved over $2M/yr. in production.
STRYKER INSTRUMENTS, Kalamazoo, MI 2012 to 2015
Product Designer - Electrical (Contractor)
Designed hardware and firmware for a microcontroller based reconfigurable
Class CF medical power supply. Firmware performed real-time voltage,
current monitoring and control for patient protection. Added flexibility
to use device with future unknown products. Provided genuine product
authentication through encrypted handshaking. Performed product
specifications, analog and digital circuit design, PCB layout, prototyping,
firmware design, and documentation. Designed a microcontroller based
irrigation pump motor controller. Translated existing designs to new CAD
systems.
INDEPENDENT CONSULTANT, Boca Raton, Florida 2010 to 2012
Consultant
Computer and network support for business and retail customers. Repair of
electromechanical medical equipment including Adjustment Tables, DICOM
viewers and servers. This provided income while searching for engineering
opportunities.
THE ANSPACH EFFORT, INC., Palm Beach Gardens, Florida 2006 to 2010
Senior Design Engineer
Responsible for conceiving and implementing new ideas, electronic
development, and firmware programming of surgical tools from concept to
manufacturing hand-off in an ISO-9000 company. Responsible for digital and
analog circuit design, schematics, PCB layout, board manufacture,
prototyping, software / firmware architecture and coding, debug, EMI
testing. Documentation for design requirements, design specifications,
testing requirements, manufacturing requirements. Hired and managing
consulting engineers and technicians.
. Reduced manufacturing and maintenance costs while increasing reliability,
manufacturability, and feature set by completely redesigning the
company's flagship electrical surgical drill. Increased efficiency and
motor response to varying loads over a dynamic range of 10K-80K RPM
through new firmware control algorithms. Increased ease of use by adding
an LCD and touchscreen with an intuitive user interface and hidden
diagnostic screens. Eliminated high shipping costs and customer
frustration, by adding field firmware upgradability via encrypted Flash
memory card. The design utilized two 16-bit DSPs, I2C, SPI, RS232, USB,
and GPIO communications.
. Reduced company liability and protected profits by conceiving and
designing a low-cost encrypted authentication handshake for batteries and
devices.
. Designed low-cost electrical hardware and firmware for a new disposable
battery powered surgical file used for spinal surgery. The design
utilized a small microcontroller for battery authentication, motor
control, and electric brake.
. Conceived and designed electrical hardware and firmware for a new
microprocessor based Lithium-Ion / Lithium-Polymer / NiCad fast battery
charger. The charger design implemented battery authentication,
conditioning, constant current and constant voltage charging algorithms
with bad battery and error detection.
. Designed a Lithium-Ion battery pack with a small-embedded 8-bit
microprocessor for genuine battery authentication.
. Designed an automated dynamometer. The system employed an eddy-current
brake to evaluate and log torque, endurance, and operating temperature of
80K RPM high-speed motors, under varying load and speed profiles.
Designed a human readable scripting language for specifying load and
speed profiles. The design included a microprocessor and communicated
with a PC via USB. Wrote the PC application in VB.NET and the firmware
in C.
INDEPENDENT CONSULTANT, Hypoluxo, Florida 1997 to 2006
Design Engineer / Consultant
. Designed a posture and weight distribution analyzer. The design included
an 8-bit microprocessor interfacing serial scales, video camera, custom
LED displays, and power-lift through USB to a PC. Wrote a custom PC
applications including communications and database storage for retrieval
of patient progress
. Designed a survey database application used by Fortune 500 companies for
internal company assessment. The ASP.net and SQL based application
allowed uninhibited anonymous responses while maintaining controlled
access to the survey.
. Wrote a networked multi-user insurance-item replacement database
application in VB6 and SQL.
. Saved irreplaceable data by performing low-level data rescue / recovery
of damaged disk drives. Very happy clients!
QUESTEC IMAGING INC., West Palm Beach, Florida 1995 to 1997
Research and Development Manager / Design Engineer
Managed in-house technical staff of five and contract technical staff /
firms. Designed, specified, developed, and implemented all company's
products. Development schedules, priorities, oversaw each project for
quality, completion, and problem resolution. Performed feasibility and
affordability studies.
. Designed and managed the DyneView 5000 LED Stadium Size Video Display.
. Redesigned GolfProView, a graphical golf putt predictor / simulator used
in live TV broadcast, to significantly increase profit margins by cutting
equipment shipping costs 50%, required personnel costs 40%, required
setup time 75%, and equipment costs 30%, while drastically improving
system accuracy.
. Redesigned company's flagship product SuperVision, a graphical ballistic
tracking of a baseball from pitcher to catcher used in live broadcast
television. The redesign allowed for easier stadium setup, greater
accuracy, real-time availability of data for live Internet applications,
and saleable historic pitch data.
