Work Experience
Analytical Chemist
US Geological Survey, Water Resources Div., National Water Quality Laboratory
Lakewood, CO
June 1985 to March 2016
I worked for the US Geological Survey, Water Resources Division, National Water Quality Laboratory from June 1985 until March 2016.
During that time, I have worked with numerous analytical techniques and state-of-the-art instrumentation/data system. My primary focus has been High Performance Liquid Chromatography & Mass Spectroscopy, using a variety of HPLC/Mass Spectroscopy instrumentation, including tandem mass spectroscopy, ion trap mass spectroscopy, and time-of-flight mass spectroscopy and the associated instrument control and data analysis software packages.
I also have experience with Gas Chromatography & Mass spectroscopy, Inductively-Coupled Plasma spectroscopy, Cold-Vapor Mercury analysis, and multiple sample preparation techniques.
The majority of my time at the NWQL, I have been with the Methods Research & Development Program, and have been involved in numerous method development projects and scientific publications.
I have been involved in the development of methodology with the multiple objectives of providing accurate identification and quantitative of diverse environmental contaminates including pesticide compounds, and emerging contaminates such as pharmaceutical and human personal care product wastes; incorporating advancements in sample preparation for improved performance, reduction in chemical usage, and automation; and to allow for the use of increasing advanced and sensitive instrumentation to achieve more sensitive and more reliable results.
Developed solid phase extraction and instrumental analysis methods for pesticides by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)/Photo diode-array, and by HPLC/Mass Spectroscopy (MS); developed methods for solid phase extraction, solvent extraction of solid samples, and instrumental analysis of pharmaceutical and human use personal care product wastes by HPLC/MS & HPLC/tandem Mass Spectroscopy (MS/MS)
Developed methods for the utilization of UPLC/Time-of-Flight mass spectroscopy for accurate mass identification of contaminants and structural elucidation of unknown chemical species in samples.
Analyzed various sample types in support of scientific publications in collaboration with others.
Assisted and trained graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and international visiting scientists on projects involving sample preparation and HPLC/MS, HPLC/MS/MS, and UPLC/Time-of-Flight Mass Spectroscopy.
