PARK RANGER
05/12 08/12
Developed and presented original professional thematic interpretive programs (guided walks and talks) about Shenandoah National Park’s significance to a myriad of audiences. These ranger programs focused on the park's geologic story, the park’s natural history and emerging critical issues such as air pollution in an effort to assist with the NEPA Act. Programs were given in a diversity of park locations including campgrounds, trails and visitor centers. These programs ranged in length from 15 minutes to 2 hours. Innovated programs included the Stony man Trail hike and Bear Talks at The Skyline Drive Diner. Audience sizes varied from 5 to 50+ people. Received 80 hours of formal training in interpretive skills, customer service, safety, and natural and cultural resources; plus 40 hours of on-the-job training in presenting interpretive programs and park operations. Had the opportunity to shadow experienced staff members while developing my original ranger programs. I was mentored and coached by staff leads and supervisors throughout the season. Performed other duties in connection with staffing the visitor center, and provided information and informal interpretation during fixed station and roving assignments. Roving occurred on popular trails and other high-use areas in the park which included. Roving was used to gain information about guest happiness and presented an opportunity to answer informal questions about the immediate cultural or natural resources. Visitor center duties required answering more formal questions at the information desk about recommended hiking trails and issuing backcountry camping permits, selling products in the bookstore, and operating the cash register and audio/visual equipment.
