Duties and Responsibilities:

Performs simple nursing procedures, assists in the delivery of patient care under the supervision and guidance of a registered nurse and performs messengerial and housekeeping tasks

Assists in the admission of patients by accompanying patient to room/bed

Assists in the discharge of patients by accompanying discharged patient from ward/room and helping in carrying their things and baggage

Assists with other activities directly concerned with patient care:

-Responds to patients call

-Takes temperature (axilla, rectal, and oral), pulse, respiratory rate, and blood pressure of patient

-Gives cleansing bath (complete and partial bed baths)

-Makes bed or changes bed linens

-Gives back care: back rub and other special care necessary

-Gives oral hygiene to conscious and unconscious patients

-Cares for the patients hair and shampoo hair (in bed or at the lavabo)

-Dresses patient

-Lifts, moves, and places patient in prescribed positions such as dorsal recumbent, Fowlers, semi-Fowlers, prone, and Sims

-Assists professional nurse in the care of the incontinent and acutely ill patients

-Gives and removes urinal/bedpan

-Observes character of feces, urine, and vomitus

-Collects specimen: feces, urine, and sputum

-Gives and does treatment under the supervision of the nurse: cleansing enema, perineal care, sitz bath, steam inhalation, ice caps and collars, insertion of rectal tube, weighing of patient, measures fluid intake and output

-Does urine testing for sugar and shows the result to the nurse

-Performs skin preparation of patients for surgery

-Feeds helpless patients, including those receiving oxygen therapy but excluding nasogastric tube (NGT) feedings

-Washes and fills water pitchers and glasses with fresh drinking water

-Uses comfort and safety devices for patients such as footboard, pillows, fracture board, rubber ring, bed adjustments, sand bags, overbed table, and side rails

-Cares for patient in partial body cast

-Transfers patient to another room or unit

-Transports patient by bed, stretcher, or wheelchair to another unit/department as necessary

-Under the supervision of the nurse, can do procedures such as administering oxygen inhalation by catheter, cannula, or mask; suctioning oro-pharyngeal secretions; and, assisting in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and bag-valve-mask ventilation through an Ambubag

-Prepares the patient for activities such as meals, receiving visitors, rest periods, and communion

-Reports to the charge nurse accidents, complaints of patients, signs and symptoms observed in patients, and out-of-order equipment and furniture

-Cooperates with the rest of the nursing team in promoting and maintaining a clean, orderly environment conducive to the optimum comfort, rest and safety of patients

-Cares for the body after death (post-mortem care)

Acts as receptionist

-Directs visitors to patients room

-Interprets rules and regulations of the hospital to visitors

-Refers visitors to staff nurse for information concerning patients condition

-Requests visitors to leave when necessary

-Fluid intake and output in the I and O sheet

-Result of urine test in the diabetic record sheet

-Checks inventory of unit supplies and equipment every shift

-Checks receipt of linen

-Procures supplies from the Nursing Office, distributes and arranges them properly in the unit, ready for use

-Requests and maintains adequate supply of linen and for emergency use especially at night

Maintains cleanliness and order of the unit

-Cares for the patients environment seeing to it that it is clean and orderly

-Cleans and maintains equipment in the patients room such as bedpans, urinal, kidney basin, sputum cup, basin, glass tray, drinking glasses, and drainage bottles

-Removes unnecessary equipment and supplies in the patients room

-Cleans equipment in the unit such as patients chart holder, charting table, non-sterile equipment, stretcher, wheelchairs, intravenous (IV) stands, and refrigerators

-Prepares room/ward for next admission

-Borrows and returns equipment/supplies to and from the Central Service and other units/departments in the hospital
