Academic Projects
●“A pilot study to Optimize Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) Conditions for Identification of Blood Biomarkers in Carcinoma Cervix”(December 2015 – March 2016). Cancer of the uterine cervix is the second leading cause of female mortality worldwide. Squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix constitutes more than 80% of the diagnosed cases. Many Biomarkers have been identified to be associated with squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix which can be used for Screening of asymptomatic individuals for carcinoma cervix and its pre malignant conditions, for predicting sensitivity to cancer based therapies, to predict the prognosis in a patient diagnosed with carcinoma cervix. The aim of the study was to optimize Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) conditions for blood biomarkers in patients diagnosed with cervical cancer and to detect the presence of circulating DNA (ct-DNA) in the blood of Indian patients. Based on the observations made we can conclude that the expression of a number of circulating DNA can be checked in the serum samples of patients which provide information of an abnormal condition in the body. Cancers contain tumor-specific (somatic) genetic alterations that are present in most cancer cells and are not present in normal cells, hence they offer an exquisitely sensitive and specific approach for cancer detection.
