Welders work from a detailed specification that clearly spells out every requirement for their specific job. For pipe welders, specifications are extremely demanding because the pipe's contents can be flammable, caustic or under high pressure. Their job is to complete each weld to the specified standards using appropriate equipment and materials, while following the employer's recommended procedures. It's also important to observe applicable safety precautions, to minimize the risk of injury to the welder or other workers nearby. Many welders supervise a team of helpers or assistants and might also be responsible for training an apprentice welder on the job site.

Pipe welding is used in a variety of settings, from commercial buildings to power generation plants and from heavy manufacturing to pipeline construction. Pipes often can't be moved as the welder works, either because they're in a constricted location or because they're too large and heavy. That means welders must work at inconvenient and uncomfortable angles, left-handed or right-handed and often with significant obstructions in their work space. It's one of the most challenging forms of welding, but skilled pipe welders are in high demand and command some of the trade's best wages.
