Advocates for English Language Learners
My group is currently lobbying the New York State Education Department, the State legislature, and the governor to change the State Education Law so that English Language Learners are afforded the same resources and interventions that are now given to other students with special needs by law.
The Early Intervention Program in New York State
Working with State Senator John DeFrancisco, I was member of a group of advocates who successfully convinced the governor and the New York State legislature not to eliminate the Early Intervention Program. That program has proven to be an essential tool used by the medical community and the schools to evaluate and diagnose young children two and under to find out if they will be needing services and resources, such as occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, IEP’s, 504 Plans, and similar interventions and extra help as they get older.
