RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Scientific Research Department Research Assistant Sept 2015 to Present
Characterization of the Influence of Pigments and age on Casein degradation in Paints by ELISA and TGA
Investigate the deterioration of organic material from paints and the methods can be used to prolong their lives
Efficiently reproduced casein and ammonia-based paintings based on recipes from literature and conducted artificial aging. All procedures and mathematical and chemical information was documented and calculated
Perform protein extraction from egg yolk
Apply NanoOrange and ELISA technology to explore the impact of degradation caused by pigments and time
Test the paints by TGA to see molecular change. Interpreted data and compared the results with NanoOrgane.
Write proposal, develop methodology, and write protocols and reports documenting the work accomplished for future publication.
Train new incoming assistant patiently in procedures and techniques
Fire Protection Engineering Department, WPI Research Assistant August 2014- May 2015
Worked on a team of four to complete a project on Micro-scale evaluation of Fiber Reinforced Polymer resins and additives to determine kinetic parameters for pyrolysis modeling
Implemented TGA and DSC techniques to test the materials and modeled experimental results to determine kinetic parameters. Specific attention was paid to activation energy and heat of decomposition
Explored thermal lag issue in TGA and made mathematical model to see how would it affect testing results
Wrote report, made final poster and conducted weekly presentation
Chemistry Department, WPI Lab Assistant June 2013-March 2014
Studied the aerobic oxidation of alcohols (1-phenylpropanol) using air as oxidant
Set up experiments independently using catalyst [Cp*IrCl2]2 with certain volume of 1-phenylpropanol and introduced X-type and L-type ligands into the main reaction environment under different conditions
Studied and evaluated ligands effect, time and temperature studies and different solvents
Analyzed and identified reaction products by calibrated gas chromatography (GC, FT-IR)
Developed Excel sheets and tables to compare each catalyst system and identify which generates the highest yield of propiophenone
Trained in maintaining proper laboratory safety, waste management and equipment managing procedure
Chemical Engineering Department, WPI Summer lab Internship July-August 2013
Worked with a PhD student to research nanomaterial in electrocatalysis and biosensor application
Coated Pt-nanoparticles on TiO2 nanotubes and input it in three-electrode system with electrolyte of PBS and glucose. Measured the concentration of glucose using electric chemical deposition method
Created graphs of results using electric chemical working station and studied the property
Searched related papers and scientific articles, presented and shared results
PROJECT EXPERIENCE
Process Safety Design Project Team member February 2016 to Present Led a team of three to work on an assigned case study of T2 Laboratories explosion incident
Identify the hazards and problems. Utilize lessons to reduce hazards and fix the problems by redesigning the reaction as well as the process equipment and procedure.
Simulated chemical process by Aspen. Analysis includes LOPA, HAZOP, process control diagram, process flow black diagram, cost estimation and pipe sizing.
Study the EPA Risk Management Program (RPM) and OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) Standard for this case.
Complete a comprehensive risk assessment of our improved design to ensure its safety
Chemical Plant Design Project Team member January2015-May 2015
Work in team to produce practical process flowsheet, equipment and plant design, and economic analysis
Designed a chemical plant layout that separates light key carbon chains from heavy while adhering to proposal specifications
Created and compiled plant PFD, P&ID, Heat Exchanger Data Sheets, pipe sizing charts, pump sizing calculations and many more essentials into a well written and documented report
Simulated the process first in Aspen Plus then backed up the program with hand written calculations
