As President of KRAKEN ENGINEERING, my primary function is resolution of client specific problems. This encompasses product design and development, trouble-shooting, and project management.

As Executive VP of Engineering for Suvara LLC, I have responsibility for all engineering aspects of this emerging business. Product and business development, company growth and increased profitability through innovation and technology are primary objectives.

As Director of Research and Development, responsibilities included all technical, managerial and legal aspects of the spraying systems division in a $200 million cosmetic packaging and spraying products company. Major areas of responsibility included technical account management of major clients, ideation, invention, design and development of all spraying technologies and systems, as well as, all contractual, patent and legal aspects of the spray system products. Serving both executive and individual contributor roles for all spraying systems products was required.

Have had responsibility for all R&D engineering department management and design functions in a $250 million manufacturer of painting and decorating products, and served as both senior project engineer and development engineer in several other industries. Responsibilities included overall engineering department management; operations and administration; all human resource, cross-functional and financial management functions; strategic management and profit improvement programs; project/program management; ECO/ECR improvements; acted as liaison with all corporate departments, quality management and DFM/Lean manufacturing; conducted training seminars and classes, customer service and support and staff hiring, training, and motivation. Managed budgets as large as $1.5 million

In addition, have also been responsible for new product research, development, and introductions; product planning, design, and development of product specifications; testing of new technologies; prototype design, construction, and checkout; reliability, HALT and qualification testing; RFPs, RFQs and the sourcing and selection and management of subcontractors; development and implementation of vendor and subcontractor contractual agreements; performing technology assessments and upgrades; data acquisition and competitive analysis; metrology; fluid handling and measurement; and regulatory compliance.

Proficient in ISO 13485 Medical Devices, ISO 9001, JIT, FDA GMPs, and 3D CAD/CAM/CAE solid modeling design software including Pro/ENGINEER and SolidWorks.

Designed a personal sprayer specifically for the Skin Therapy market.

Product problems may include proper selection, application, design verification and validation, sound/vibration attenuation and meeting performance requirements of various types of mechanical products.

2011 – 2014 Director Research and Development

HCT PACKAGING, Bridgewater, New Jersey (working from home office/shop in MN)

A family owned $200 million global leader in cosmetic packaging, manufacturing and turnkey solutions.

Salvaged an $80 billion client’s account by successfully redesigning a product of interest to meet client performance requirements Managed all technical aspects of the account. This resulted in the upgraded listing of HCT from “specialty vendor” to “primary vendor”, creating sales opportunities previously unattainable.

Designed and brought to proof of concept phase several spraying technologies, including a manual pump sprayer, a petite handheld motorized atomizer and a CO2 powered sprayer. All were solely designed, modeled, fabricated, documented, pitched and demonstrated.

Developed relationships with several technology leaders for product development partnerships. Such technologies included Ultrasonic Atomization, Piezo-Electrics, Jet Pumps, Electrostatic Atomization, Hydrodynamic Extrusion Atomization, Electron Beam Atomization and others.

2003 – 2010 Engineering Manager- Advanced Research and New Product Development

WAGNER SPRAYTECH, Plymouth, Minnesota

A $250 million manufacturer of painting and decorating products including electric and gas airless paint-spray equipment.

Developed an affordable, cordless consumer paint sprayer which became the industry standard in performance for battery powered airless sprayers resulting in a new product category and millions of dollars in increased revenue for Wagner.

Designed and developed the “Optimus” product line of power paint sprayers incorporating new technology, higher quality, and major improvements to an existing product line. Result was the most significant performance improvement in the 60-year history of the power painter, concurrently reducing product returns by 33% adding over $3,900,000 to the bottom line.

Designed and developed the company’s first Remotely Fed Portable Airless Paint Sprayer.

Developed and fostered the relationship with 3M to customize an existing 3M paint removal product to comply with Wagner’s system requirements. Designed the new product system and product specifications, performed the feasibility study, conducted the design verification and testing, and acted as liaison with the 3M technical staff.

1992 – 2002 Senior (Lead) Mechanical Engineer

AEQUITRON MEDICAL (A division of Tyco Healthcare), Plymouth, Minnesota

Tyco was a multi-billion dollar company involved in the manufacture and distribution of medical devices and consumables. Initially hired in 1992 as a Mechanical Engineer, promoted in 1996 to Senior (Lead) Mechanical Engineer.

Developed a portable volume ventilator device to replace the existing product line. Designed all mechanical aspects including a patented oxygen blender, integrated PMDC motor and gearbox, integrated airflow sensing and sound abatement systems, and new clinical modes of operation. This life support device became the major revenue generator for Aequitron Medical. Awarded several domestic and international patents for this device.

Designed and developed an innovative new Respiratory Insufficiency Breathing Device (CPAP/Bi-PAP) incorporating the smallest package size in the industry and the most sensitive and comfortable breath trigger. This became the industry standard in its product class.
