Work History 1978 – 2016
During the 4 years of medical school, I worked on weekends and some nights in the medical labs of the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. I did thousands of patient blood samples testing for all serum chemistries on the Beckman analyzers and by hand, and did CBC’s on the Coulter Counters. I also did U/A’s and toxicology. That is how I took care of my family during medical school.
After residency, I worked for 25 years as an emergency physician working for a number of emergency medicine contractors. I have worked for very small hospitals and extremely large trauma centers.
In 1984, I designed and built a 6,000 square foot emergency medicine center in Amarillo, TX. I was the owner and CEO, and I had 14 employees, including 2 contracted physicians. We saw 60-100 patients daily. Eventually, I sold this facility to High Plains Baptist Hospital for a profit and then moved to the Dallas area.
I began working as a physician in the workers’ compensation arena. Soon, I started a medical administrative business to do all of the medical record summaries, MMI reports, Designated Doctor reports, scheduling of patients throughout the State of Texas, etc. We furnished 70 exam sites in cities throughout Texas, and we paid airfare and travel expenses for the doctors to travel to the exam sites to do a Designated Doctor exam for workers comp. cases. We did administrative work for 75-85 doctors. I quit doing this work after 10 years in the business because the rules changed regarding fees and it was not as profitable.
During the past 6 years, I have been doing some medical writing and marketing medical equipment to hospitals and clinics. I have also marketed DNA products, including DNA pharmacogenomics and cancer genomics. I have also done some physician home visits for 3 companies
I have also been involved in technical writing and marketing writing. I have written a number of comprehensive medical care plans and guidelines. I have also written a number of marketing documents for the companies that I operated.
I have often considered a career in writing, but as a busy clinician I did not pursue it. Now that I have retired from patient care I am pursuing a position in medical writing.
