A privately held start-up development company with coal reserves in 5 States serving the utility and steel industries.
Major Achievements
Developed and completed the physical and financial review and analysis of a $600 million coal project portfolio for funding by private equity investors.
SUNCOKE COMPANY –Knoxville, TN 2004 – 2011
Wholly owned subsidiary of Sunoco, Inc., engaged in building, owning, and operating heat recovery coke and electrical cogeneration facilities.
Vice President Project Development
This position was responsible for directing and managing all aspects of the project development of new coke production and electrical cogeneration facilities, and the ensuing customer support. This included: site evaluations; environmental permitting; securing financial incentive and tax packages; negotiating off-take contract terms and conditions; project management with internal and external engineering, vendors, operations, finance, legal, customers, and community and governmental representatives; and, customer support.
Major Achievements
Developed $270 million, $360 million and $430 million coke and cogeneration facilities in Haverhill, OH, Granite City, IL and Middletown, OH.
Established PJM grid interconnect agreements on over 100MWs of cogeneration production.
TJW RESOURCES, LLC – Pittsburgh, PA 2001 – 2004

Provided consulting and management services to various industrial clients. Services provided: business development and project management; production analysis; financial analysis; sales negotiations; labor negotiations; and, asset optimization.
Major Achievements
Provided a mining client operational management services, resulting in $400,000 annual savings.
Completed a financial and operational review for a mining client, resulting in the total reorganization of its operations.
Negotiated a $16 million order, with a new customer, for a coal client.

Position was specifically crafted around my management background. Responsibilities included; negotiating sales agreements; remote sales office management; production forecasting; market analysis; project construction reporting; strategic planning; project identification; and, profit analysis.
Major Achievements
Completed numerous due diligence reports on new business opportunities, including river dock operations, synthetic fuel operations, coal mining operations, and re-powering generation facilities.
Project managed the construction of a 1.2 million tons per year synthetic fuel production facility serving the utility market.
KOPPERS INDUSTRIES INC. – Pittsburgh, PA 1994 – 1998
A $600 million corporation producing chemicals, coke, carbon materials, and treated wood products at twenty-one plants
General Manager, Coke Division
A $100 million division producing one million tons of metallurgical and foundry coke for use in steel company blast furnaces and foundry cupolas
Reporting to the CEO, this position managed 540 employees between two coke operations located in Alabama and Pennsylvania. Responsibilities included: full P&L management; operations management; TQM; JIT; marketing; sales negotiations; capital expenditure approval; project management; logistics; inventory management; safety and environmental compliance; strategic planning; and, short- and long-term planning.
Major Achievements
Managed the refurbishment of an idle coke production facility, negotiated the sales contracts, managed the subsequent production facility, and generated $13 million annual profit.
Successfully initiated and oversaw dramatic inventory reductions, through consignment inventory management, to free up over $3 million in working capital.
Evaluated the long-term viability of a coke production facility including; environmental compliance, economic performance, market potential, and future capital requirements. Presented the results and recommendation to the Board of Directors for acceptance.

Vice President and General Manager, Virginia Division - Lexington, KY 1986 - 1991
$200 million division producing 7.5 million tons of metallurgical and utility grade coal from 4 deep mines
Reporting to the Executive Vice President, this position was responsible for the P&L results of a 1200 employee division. Responsibilities included: coal production and inventory planning; labor negotiations; approval of capital expenditures; SPC, long-term planning and budgeting; sales price and contract approval; major sales contract negotiations; and, domestic and international partnership management. Extensive travel was required throughout the U.S., South America, and Europe -- including Eastern Europe.
Major Achievements
Executed P&L responsibility by returning the division to profitability through team-based cost control management, project management, and innovative marketing strategies.
Negotiated major new long-term contracts in non-traditional markets to increase the production capacity utilization rate from 35% to 100%.
Increased production and productivity in the division by over 300% through team leadership, while maintaining staffing levels and improving quality control and customer satisfaction.
