WORK RELATED EXPERIENCE
I have worked on every aspect of marine construction from setting the keel to
launching the vessel, specifically on vessels under 200 feet in length. I have set the keel,
set main transverse frames, run the longitudinal frames, installed shell plate, set deck plate
and overhead frames, set bulkheads and vertical frames, set the house, installed bullwork
and handrails. On vessels longer than 200 feet, I have been involved in refit and repair
work. I have been also worked on vessels in excess of 500 feet. In addition, I read
blueprints, lift measurements from existing structures, layout and cut materials to specified
dimensions using plasma cutter or torches, prepare cut material for assembly ( grinding and
beveling), and anticipate the proper procedure for assembly and/or disassembly of a given
structure. I can make and use common fitting tools, i.e., dogs saddles, padeyes and lifting
lugs. I have extensive experience in the use of rigging equipment to move and position
materials, such as chainfalls, comealongs and nylon straps, cables, chains, shackles,
hydraulic rams, port-a power, bottle jacks, and turnbuckles. I can fit material, tack weld it
into position, either with butt tacks or using strongbacks. I am able to layout and cut
accesses or inserts, wash welds or bevels, shape material, set foundations and make seals
and gaskets for hatches and other sealing surfaces. Reading blueprints, lifting
measurements, laying out, cutting and preparing materials, production and use of fitting
tools, rigging and fitting are daily tasks as well as reporting the status of your assignment at
the end of the work day. Cutting accesses and inserts are common practices but usually
only apply to refit or repair work when material needs to be replaced or a specialized
access to a given space is required. Shaping material, making seals or gaskets, and setting
foundations are less common procedures associated with refit and repair work. In new
construction theses tasks are usually performed by the outside machinist but shipfitters
must be able to perform these tasks if required. I am also proficient with any and all tools
associated with my job profession such as portable plasma cutters, track torches, magnetic
track torches, surveying equipment, dial indicators, dial calipers, micrometers, shim stock,
taper taps, taper pins, magnetic base drills, metal bandsaws, overhead cranes, grinders,
scaling gun, torches, torch lines, welding leads and machines, chainfalls, comealongs,
choker cables or chains, shackles, hydraulic rams turnbuckles, bottle jacks, and various
other types of equipment as necessary.
