Motorola Inc. / Motorola Solutions Inc., Schaumburg, IL
1991 -2013
Senior Engineering Manager, Central Systems Engineering
2004 - 2013
. Led a multifunctional support engineering team. Grew organization
from 18-engineer trunked radio systems support team to 38-member
organization responsible for escalation support of customer issues for
Motorola's portfolio of public safety voice and data systems,
including network security.
. Managed a $4M+ budget for services & equipment, plus ~$1M per year in
capital spend. Customer facing focal point for complex customer-found
issues, strong collaboration with development engineering. Strong
tactical program management skills ensured diverse group cohesion for
issue resolution.
. Created and implemented the necessary operational measurements, metrics
and processes to enable the team to increase workload and staffing on
customer issues by over 300% while reducing customer average issue
resolution cycle time from by over 50% from an average over 60 days to
under 30 days.
. Launched the first Network Security Services offerings for Public Safety
Radios, developing a $3 Million+ annual service business from scratch.
. Expanded team skill set from a core expertise in trunked radio systems
to support the entire public safety communications portfolio to include
fixed and mobile data systems, WAN/LAN networking, Command & Control
Dispatch Consoles, Network Security, and Project Management.
. Team's capabilities & technical expertise widely recognized as "best
in class" & in high demand for consulting & lab test facilities.
. Member of elite MSI technical Architecture Review Board to influence
system roadmaps, with a particular focus on service and tools.
Systems Engineering Manager, North America Group System Planning 1997
- 2003
. Led a team of engineers focused on creating customer design
applications and migration strategies.
. Used strong collaboration skills to drive systems road map decisions
and fully engineered solutions with voice of customer inputs as focal
point between product development and field sales groups.
. My technical white papers analyzing technical options and business
tradeoffs were a key influence in developing Motorola's highly
successful ASTRO25 digital land mobile radio systems portfolio, which
for the past 12+ years has maintained a dominant market share in the
North American public safety communications market. One significant
example was confidential internal white paper comparing coverage,
cost, and performance capabilities of multiple FDMA and TDMA land
mobile radio technologies.
. Worked on over 20 large statewide system bid responses to identify key
technical development needs and risks, Motorola won over 90% of these
bids worth billions of dollars in total revenue.
. Identified unique technical solutions to fill specific customer market
niches, including the MOTOBridge IP networked interoperability solution.
Lead Systems Engineer, Customer's Center for System Integration (CCSi)
1991- 1997
. Customer facing role leading total effort from initial design to
customer demonstration and shipment to the field for system
integration and test of a wide range of customer communications
systems.
. As part of the initial startup cadre that transformed radio systems
deployment from a custom in-field operation to a standardized
manufacturing process, we transformed Motorola's radio systems business
from a money-losing operation to a consistently profitable, high profit
margin business. The processes I created were a game changer from system
deployment, transforming it from a 3-6 month operation requiring dozens
of staff months of effort to a 2-4 week 2 staff month effort.
. I completely changed the way that systems are built and installed by
replacing custom designed labor intensive interconnect wiring with
standardized modular patch panels. This design improvement eliminated
weeks of cycle time and effort while improving troubleshooting
capabilities. The result was tens of thousands of dollars of savings per
system, and has been implemented on over 500 fielded systems for over $10
Million in direct savings over the decade-plus lifecycle of this
invention. I earned a major design award and 2 patents for these designs.
Field Systems Engineer, Area B Engineering 1988
. Performed radio system RF coverage prediction modeling and mapping,
point to point communications studies, in-field radio RF coverage
testing, radio system interference and intermodulation studies, radio
infrastructure site design and equipment list, and provided sales
technical support.
US Air Force Officer (Captain, USAFR)
1988 - 1991
343rd Strategic Reconnaissance Squadron, Offutt AFB, NE
. Duties included planning and flying worldwide strategic electronic
reconnaissance missions as Navigator / Electronic Warfare Officer on
the RC-135 "Rivet Joint" aircraft. Numerous overseas deployments for
Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, including 150+ hours combat
flying time.
