For the past 12 years, I have been the lead Clinical
Research Coordinator for the Renal Division at Boston
Medical Center / Boston University School of Medicine. In
this position, I coordinated clinical trials and
observational studies sponsored by the National Institutes
of Health (NIH) and by industry. The NIH-sponsored
studies included two large multicenter randomized clinical
trials of pharmacologic agents to improve hemodialysis
vascular access outcomes, and one large multicenter
observational study to elucidate risk factors and
mechanisms of hemodialysis arteriovenous fistula
maturation failure. I also served as the coordinator for a
pilot study and for a clinical trial of a novel treatment
(first-in-man) for renal amyloidosis. The first 2 of these
trials involved 5 study sites (2 of these sites were at
the Jamaica Plains and West Roxbury VA) and numerous
dialysis facilities within Eastern Massachusetts. The
process of initiating, implementing and generating high
quality data for these studies required, strong problem
solving skills, flexibility, careful management of time,
and the ability to prioritize and work harmoniously with
multiple departments at multiple study sites. Throughout
the course of each trial patient safety and privacy were
always guided by the federal human subject regulations and
Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines. Utilizing a
shared drive I was able to improve the study team's
efficiency and communication with the development of MS
Excel data collection sheets.
Other responsibilities included; staff training; assisting
the Clinical Trial Financial Analyst in assuring proper
billing of research related services; and participating as
an active member of the national study Steering Committee.
