Resume:

Robert Kauser!

650-***-**** ********@*****.***!

Belmont CA 94002!

OBJECTIVE!

Legal Administrator and Paralegal seeking position in media, technology, or a related

field. More than 15 years of experience in contract management, research, risk

assessment, legal compliance, and legal policy development and implementation.

EXPERIENCE

Cengage Learning, Intellectual Property Director, 2009-2013!

• Managed 35 in house specialists and independent contractors, and 40 off shore

researchers responsible for obtaining, assessing, and ingesting contracts from media

and technology sources, science and technology companies, music publishers,

photographers, stock image agencies, commercial and educational publishers, and film

and television studios for use in digital and print educational products. Researched and

processed shared rights among music publishers for proper royalties distributions. !

• Analyzed third-party contract issues with editorial and production stakeholders,

consulted the General Counsel for resolutions, and provided the resolutions to the

stakeholders within 48 hours.!

"

• Met each fiscal quarter with the Executive leaders as liaison for the General Counsel

for strategic planning sessions to review legal policy updates, and to present reports to

the editorial team to identify problematic content two years prior to its planned re-use.!

"

• Performed due diligence legal research for General Counsel to ensure contract

compliance, negotiate contract extensions, and replace content as needed to meet

contractual obligations.!

• Partnered with the Executive leadership, Vendor Relations Manager, Finance Director,

Fulfillment Manager, and the Development team to strategize and plan for upcoming

production schedules, to prevent legal issues from occurring by previewing content,

and to resolve any legal issues within the parameters of the legal policies.!

"

• Represented the General Counsel at industry conventions and off-site meetings and was

an active participant in strategy discussions and production planning at regular

company presentations, both in person and on WebX, to present, explain, and field

queries about new and revised legal policies. I also mentored newer members to the

Legal team as well as key production heads, editors, and assistants, reviewing legal

policies and procedures, and explaining the Legal workflow.!

"

• Collaborated with the Legal administrative team to streamline and revise our content

management database guidelines by limiting data entry to include only third-party

content. This eliminated the time required to enter ‘fair use’, company-owned, and

public domain data, and reducing the average data entry fees by $10,000 per project.!

"

• I implemented a realignment of workflow by assigning each researcher to a set list of

disciplines, effectively creating a team of Subject Matter Experts. This realignment

synchronized my group with the editorial and production group alignments, and

established each researcher as a permanent member of these extended teams.!

"

"

International Thomson Publishers, 1997-2009!

• Managed 40 in house and off site researchers to research, acquire and ingest

permissions contracts for 300+ projects per year!

• Provided QA review for all teams on legal issues throughout all stages of production,

and communicated weekly status of each project to authors and project teams!

• I directed our off-shore production and research vendors on project management,

copyright and trademark issues.!

"

• Provided weekly metrics on budgets, schedules and forecasting for Executive

management!

• Recruited and trained foreign language researchers as a resource for company’s

international market in Germany, France and Spain!

• Managed outgoing rights for both international and domestic permission requests!

• Registered and renewed Copyright for all titles and products!

• Co-created company’s Content Management System !
