• Researched emerging constitutional issues pertaining to public school law, particularly

the searches of students with School Resource Officers present, the impact of true threats

on student speech and public school graduation ceremonies and the religion clauses of the

First Amendment. Updated Charter School Policy outlines to conform with recently

passed North Carolina legislation. Researched existing Cloud Computing Services

Contracts for K12 Public Schools.

Office of the State Auditor Raleigh, NC

Extern to the General Counsel May 2013- August 2013

• Researched existing social media policies in North Carolina state agencies to create an

internal procedure for acceptable employee social media use. Streamlined requisite

employee trainings for handling confidential information in accordance with HIPAA,

FERPA and other governmental regulations. Assisted General Counsel in legal issues

arising in the auditing process, particularly gaining access to otherwise confidential

information. Investigated legal issues reported through the whistleblower tip line.

• Assisted associate counsel in performing his pro bono responsibilities. Completed client

intake memos and investigated potential conflicts of interest. Conducted client meetings,

interviews and site visits for Landlord-Tenant matters. Created a Settlement Agreement

for a breach of contract action. Prepared three Written Affidavits and oversaw their

notary. Attended both district court and small claims court in pursuance of a judgment for

our pro bono clients. Completed a Guardian Ad Litem Brief in accordance with all

relevant time, content and format restrictions.

• Developed a Truancy Effectiveness Research study, cataloging more than 250 case files

into a comprehensive spreadsheet and written into a detailed report summary. Observed

more than 100 hours of criminal, truancy and domestic abuse court.

Democracy North Carolina Durham, NC

Democracy Summer Intern May-July 2009

• Contacted more than 10,000 Democracy NC supporters to raise awareness about

campaign finance reform legislation. Generated more than 1,000 phone calls, 500 emails,

and 400 hand-written post cards to NC legislators in support of Voter Owned Elections.

Completed a research project, tracking campaign donations to Former NC Gov. Mike

Easley from subsequent political appointees. Gave interviews to raise awareness about

organization issues. Lobbied NC General Assembly members to secure the passage of

sponsored legislation.
