energy (e.g., heating oil delivery, gas stations).
. Trained junior analysts. Supervised underwriting of Highly
Leveraged Transactions and other complex exposures.
. Made changes to underwriting approach that directly improved
the Bank's profitability:
. Created analytical models adopted Bank-wide: financial
statement analysis, debt service coverage, discounted cash
flow, collateral coverage and guarantor strength.
. Introduced modifications to written commercial credit
approval format (streamlining and adding sections relevant
to more complex transactions).
. New models and credit approval format enabled the Bank to
consider larger, more complex and higher priced
transactions (100 -200 bps higher than the typical loan),
including Highly Leveraged Transactions, Employee Stock
Option Plans and acquisition finance.
. Highly Leveraged Transactions grew from one $4MM loan to
over $50MM in total exposure, representing over 10% of the
Bank's C&I portfolio, and through November 2009 had
outperformed the overall loan portfolio in terms of
delinquency and covenant default.
. Reviewed all aspects of proposed transactions involving
mezzanine debt and/or equity investors, including inter-
creditor agreements and subordinations.
. Routinely worked with lender, potential client and other
capital providers to structure the transaction prior to
presentation to Credit Committee.
. Made formal recommendations to Credit Committee and Board of
Investment concerning proposed credit exposures assigned for
review. Assigned Credit Risk Ratings to each loan.
. Wrote lending policy for retail heating oil industry,
including transaction types, advance rates, financial
covenants and required financial disclosure. The Bank more
than tripled its credit exposure to this industry, with zero
past-dues as of 11/09.
