ACADEMIC RESEARCH PROJECT :
“Metal free organic dye for a Dye sensitized solar cell”
Title of the Project : Synthesis and Photo physical study of Triphenylamine –
Fluorene based Donor- Acceptor system.
Guide : Dr. S.H. Mashraqui
26th May 2013 to 20th Feb. 2014.
Duration :
SUMMARY ABOUT THE PROJECT:
• Till today’s date the photovoltaic field is dominated by inorganic silicon based solar
cells.
• Ruthenium based organic solar cells also showed good efficiency but this also have some
disadvantages like ruthenium is expensive.
• So we attempted and successfully synthesized metal free organic dye which does the
function of sensitizer in DSSC.
• The aim of the project was to synthesize a dye for a solar cell belonging to the group of
thin film solar cell (DSSC).
• This dye belongs to second class of dye sensitized solar cell. i.e. Metal free organic dye.
• To start with we prepared different donor and acceptor moieties.
• The donor moiety basically is an electron donating component which comprises of
triphenyal amine and di-tert butyl fluorene. The acceptor moiety used was cyano acetic
acid.
• Triphenyl amine because of its planar geometry and electron donating nature act as a
donor, and cyano acetic acid because of its electron withdrawing nature acts as acceptor
apart from this it does the function of anchoring group that binds with the TiO 2
nanoparticles.
• Synthetic route of the dye mainly contains named reaction mechanism which are
bromination, condensation,Vilesmeir hack formylation and Knovenegal condensation
• The Dye was analyzed by means of IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, Mass spectroscopy.
• The IR spectra of the dye showed one broad peak at 3400 cm -1 for carboxylic OH group
and another peak at 2200 cm-1 for cyano group, thus confirming the structure of the dye.
• UV -Visible and Fluorescence study of the dye showed Negative solvatochromism, form
going to non polar solvents to polar solvents, blue shift was observed.
• This dye showed high molar extinction coefficient because of internal charge transfer
from donor part to acceptor part.
OTHER SKILLS:
• Patience.
• Hard working.
• Good listener and keen observer.
• Can work independently or in a team.
• Ability to grasp new challenging things quickly.
• Leadership quality.
RESEARCH INTEREST:
• Multistep synthesis.
• Organic dye.
• Photovoltaics.
• Drug discovery.
• Asymmetric synthesis.
