MANAGING EDITOR/SPORTS

Page; made editorial decisions to remake the newspaper in the event of

late-breaking news.

USA TODAY 1982 - 1995

MULTIPLE ASSIGNMENTS

. 1982-1986: Assisted in the launch of USA TODAY in 1982. Served on the

copy-editing and rewrite desk. Duties included copy editing staff and

wire copy for daily sports section and special single-topic printed

editions produced by the newspaper. Also, rewrote wire stories as

needed or added detailed information to staff-reported stories.

. 1986-1988: Night Rewrite Editor. Duties included managing staff of

five in compiling the nightly major sports news reports for the

newspaper, rewriting stories for daily publication, working with

reporters to ensure stories were completed in time to meet daily

publication deadline, making decisions on remaking the sports decision

on deadline to accommodate late-breaking news stories.

. 1988-1990: Sports Opinion Page Editor. Duties included planning weekly

topics for the commentary page, contracting and negotiating

compensation with national personalities to write commentaries for the

page, working with page designers and art directors in developing the

commentary page, and soliciting reader comments for the page.

. 1990-1995: NFL Editor. Duties included supervising staff of six full-

time NFL reporters and a national stringer network of 32

correspondents, planning news coverage for the season, assigning news

stories, coordinating weekly travel arrangements for reporters,

supervising news coverage of the Super Bowl, NFL draft, and training

camps. Responsibilities also included editing reporters' stories for

daily publication, and providing job evaluations and career

development advice for direct reports.

PENSACOLA NEWS JOURNAL 1979-1982

SPORTS EDITOR

Responsibilities included supervising the Sports Department in the

production of the daily sports report. Reported and wrote stories on high

school, college and professional sports. Wrote a daily sports column, made

story assignments, reported and wrote stories, edited daily sports copy,

and provided employee evaluations.

PENSACOLA NEWS JOURNAL 1974-1979

Responsibilities included reporting and writing on high school sports and

contributing to the daily sports report.
