Objective: To lead a congregation closer to the Lord through praise and worship music in such a
way that they desire to know Him better and are able to focus more clearly on Him during the week
Means used to reach objective:
o Emphasize participation rather than performance by:
Using songs with basically intuitive melodies
Pulling from sources the larger body of Christ has some familiarity with such
as the radio, the CCLI Top 200, and songs or hymns that have become part of
the general culture.
Re-keying songs so that the range is not difficult for the average person
without musical training
o Create a worshipful atmosphere by
Prayer: we need the Lord in every part in order for true worship to happen
Creating song sets that have a flow thematically and musically where possible
Often starting with the more joyful celebratory songs then moving into songs
of commitment, intimacy, or simply awe
Using (when possible) songs that address the Lord versus simply sing about
Him
Utilizing the circle of fifths or straight modulations when possible to enable
more seamless transitions between songs
Finding those songs the congregation is able to respond to, drawing from the
various cultures, nationalities, and ages represented there and in the local
demographics
Making sure the lyrics are God honoring and scriptural
Bridging songs with a one or two sentence prayer or a short scripture, where
deemed helpful
Using the above to cue people on the direction an unfamiliar song will go. That
has helped those unfamiliar with a song, still be able to enter into worship.
New songs otherwise can hinder worship when people do not know where the
song is going
o Creating a true team environment among the musicians and signers
Fostering a cooperative rather than competitive atmosphere. Most of the
teams we have worked with seem to naturally desire to support one another in
this way
Creating a safe place to experiment and grow in new ways
• Understanding few if any are professional musicians
• Allowing the team to find its own sound rather than imposing
something else
• Making room for all ranges of skill and ability
Providing the materials the team needs in order to function well. To do this I:
• Create chord sheets in MS Word building on the basic CCLI sheets
and adjusting the chords and placement where necessary
• Try to make the church sheets easy to follow by using a clear font and
by either using things like boxes and arrows to indicate the flow of the
song, or creating a two-page sheet. Sometimes I create both so the
musicians can have which works better for them
• Provide recordings of the songs when possible. I use software to put
the song into the key to be used so it is possible to practice with a
recording
• Putting the materials in Dropbox before the scheduled practice and
providing each member with the download link
Incorporating ideas given by the team members and truly hearing their
concerns. Understanding the body of Christ really does work like a body. None
of us has all the answers and it is such joy to see how the Lord uses each
one.

Other information
Pat and Mike work together as a team in the music ministry.
o
Both enjoy recruiting new team members, and finding and developing new talent –
o
especially in those who did not realize they had musical ability.
Mike provides a strong musical base through playing guitar. He provides vocal
o
harmony as well as sings lead. He also leads worship, but generally concentrates on
providing a strong musical foundation for the team.
Pat focuses largely on directing the team and on leading worship. While she does
o
play guitar, electric bass guitar, and recently has begun learning keyboard, the strong
base that Mike provides allows her to focus more fully on leading the worship and
incorporating the rest of the team.
Mike mentors new guitar players as needed.
o
We both believe in including as many people in the music ministry and drawing on as
o
wide a range of ages as possible.
We incorporate a number of songs currently played on the radio into the worship
o
service because these are songs that will be familiar to many in the congregation, but
we do not limit the selection to these songs.
As an extension of worship ministry, Pat has also begun writing. Two devotional
o
articles were purchased for publication by “The Upper Room” and they are holding
two more. Forte Magazine (Assembly of God) published an article and requested
another. She plans to expand to short stories and larger works with the goal of leading
others closer to Christ.
Mike is currently employed by the Food and Drug Administration as Senior Advisor,
o
Office of Food Safety.
In the past year, Pat has become involved in the abolition of modern-day slavery
o
through International Justice Missions and the Richmond Justice Initiative
