Specialization: Geology
Minor: Philosophy

being in the backcountry for three months
Relevant Laboratory Experience:
• Marine Sedimentation and Stratigraphy: core collection, dissection, % carbonate test, total organic carbon
through loss upon ignition test, grain size through sieve analysis and mean phi through settling tube
instrumentation
o “Sediment History of the Vinoy Basin Using Seismic Data and Vibracores”; 2011
Co-Author; Research was conducted in order to determine the influence of the Saint
Petersburg Pier upon the Vinoy Basin in Tampa Bay. Seismic data was gathered using the
CHIRP Sub-Bottom Profiler System in order to locate old channels that could be filled with
fine grained sediments associated with the lowered current flow with the creation of the
pier. Cores were retrieved via vibracoring methods, next sedimentary analysis was carried
out, and finally a written report and poster were presented.
• Earth Materials: Identification of minerals through optical mineralogy as well as physical
characteristics such as streak, luster, cleavage, fluorescence, specific gravity, etc.
• Chemical and Physical Oceanography: Seawater quality of collected water and sediment samples.
Analyses include % Dissolved Oxygen through titration to determine saturation horizon, Total
Chlorophyll through spectrophotometry, and Total Phosphate through colorimetric analysis.
Relevant Coursework:
• Marine Geochemistry
• Coastal Geology
• Principles of Hydrology
• Earth Structure
• Earth Systems History
• Biological and Geological Oceanography
