PROJECT EXPERIENCE

Study of strength behavior of urban fills stabilized with bagasse ash and other additives

M.Tech, East West Institute of Technology, VTU, Bangalore

2013

Objective: To improve the engineering properties of urban fills and make it suitable for construction

Description: Soil stabilization helps increase the strength of the existing soil to improve its capacity for load bearing and allows increase and evenly distributes support to the structure. Urban fills are used in this investigation. These urban fills may have arisen inadvertently from the demolished buildings and slow accumulation of refuse and excavation. Old urban fills of this type may contain soil, rubble, and even whole parts of past construction. These deposits are generally prone to severe problems therefore, the stabilization of soil is done as it could be used for construction. Hence in the present investigation an attempt is made to improve the strength characteristics of soil by stabilizing it with bagasse ash and additives like cement and lime. Along with the bagasse ash and other additives such as cement and lime are used to enhance the strength characteristics of soil. The experiments has been conducted on Specific Gravity, Atterburg limits, Compaction, Unconfined Compression strength test and California Bearing Ratio test on urban fills stabilized with bagasse ash, cement and lime with varying percentages.

Conclusions: Based on the study, bagasse ash can be recommended as stabilizing agent for improving soils.

Use of Plastic Waste Materials in Road Construction

B.E, Nagarjuna College of Engineering, VTU, Bangalore

2011

Objective: To check for an improvement in strength and compressibility response, with the inclusion of Plastic waste.

Description: This study provides an approach for the use of plastic waste as reinforcement material in soil, which is used for sub-bases and subgrade preparation in road construction. The concept of soil reinforcement has dramatically changed the function of soil as a construction material. Reinforced soil construction is an efficient and reliable technique for improving the strength and stability of soils. The plastic waste when mixed with soil results in improvement of soil response in the case of roads and embankments, soil being a natural resource, the quantity of soil can be reduced. In this project, an attempt for recycling of plastic water bottles in the field of geotechnical engineering as reinforcing material is made. The experiment has been conducted on Specific Gravity, Atterburg limits, Compaction, Unconfined Compression strength test, Triaxial compression test and compressibility tests.

Conclusions: Based on the study, the plastic waste when mixed with red soil and sand could be used as an alternative subgrade material in the construction of roads.
