Responsibilities:
-Responsible for morning chores at 3AM (Milking)
Cleaning the milking area using a water hose and a big pale, before and after milking.
Preparing the milking machine and disinfecting it using a warm water.
Filling inthe feeding trough with feeds (lactation feeds, molasses or corn bran) to let cow’s chow
on it while milking.
Waking up cows from the paddock and moved them to the milking parlor and pile them to the
milking chute to get milk.
Cleaning the cow’s teats with water and pat it dry with a clean cloth and sanitising it using an
iodine (dipping the teats) and then dry it using a sanitised cloth (which is called “teat prepping”).
Then a forced stripping is done on cow’s teats to check the quality of the milk using a
dishwashing liquid soap to check if there is mastitis. This process is making sure that there is no
infection or problem with the cow before milking and to produce good quality of milk.
Then, putting the milking machine on the cow’s teats by inserting the suction cups and milking
the cow within3-5 minutes.
Pouring the milk to a clean milking cans and then set it to the fireplace and pasteurised the milk
for about 30 minutes with a temperature of 65 C (holder method) to eliminate pathogens and
extendshelf-life. The process is intended to reduce spoilage organisms and eliminate vegetative
bacteria but not bacterial spores.
Cleaning of the milking machine and milking cansusing a dishwashing soap a tube brush and
dipped on a hot water for further disinfection and dry.
Milking is done twice a day at 3:30 in the morning and 11:30 in the afternoon.
-Feeding and cleaning of calves pen and the feed lot and the whole barn at 7AM – 9AM
-Doing field work, like planting and harvesting fresh grasses(such as molatto, napier, etc.),
making fences and raking hay. Also, eliminating unwanted grasses growing on the paddocks.
-Operating heavy machines such as tractor for cultivating the field where grasses are being planted
and using the harvester machine for harvesting.
-Sacking of cattle’s manure for vermiculture composting.
-Treating and vaccination of cattle’s (including calves) diseases and removing sucking lice and
other parasites using chemicals.
-Doing artificial insemination as the farm no longer uses the natural mating process as this is
more efficient for a successful pregnancy of a cow.
