Registered Nurse/IV Infusion Nurse
As a clinical research nurse, I work closely with the Primary Investigator (Site physician) and Clinical Research Coordinators by performing required screening procedures on prospective candidates for currently enrolling clinical studies. My responsibilities include: Patient intake/assessment, obtaining vital signs, performing ECG’s, bladder scans, spirometry assessments; obtain, process, and package laboratory samples for shipment to off-site laboratories; documentation of dispensation and accountability for Investigational Product (study medication). Daily use of Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) & maintain/follow Good Clinical Practice/ICH guidelines.
I am responsible for Administration of Investigational Product (study medications) via IV infusion (Alzheimer’s/Cognitively Impaired patients), IM injections (schizophrenic/bipolar patients), SC Injections (Osteoarthritis patients) & PO (Alzheimer, Schizophrenic, Major Depressive Disorder, Schizoaffective patients).
I am certified to perform required Rater Assessments for patients suffering from mild/moderate cognitive impairment. These scales include: Mini Mental Status Exam, Clinical Dementia Rating, Clinician Interview Based Impression Scale, Clinical Global Impression of Change Scale, ADCS-Activities of Daily Living Scale,
Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale, & Functional Activities Questionnaire. I also perform Neurocognitive Assessments which include: Brief Visuospatial Memory Test – Revised, Emotional Inhibition Test, BAC App (Verbal Memory, Digit Sequencing, Token Motor Test, Verbal Fluency, Symbol Coding, Tower of London Assessment), & Brief Visuospatial Memory Test.
I work closely with our Radiologic Site (Tower Radiology) to coordinate/schedule procedures & obtain agreements for required services which are performed at several of sites located within the Tampa area.
I order all laboratory supplies needed for obtaining required lab work, as well as, supplies needed for IV Infusion/Pharmacological Drug Mix, & IM/SC Injections. I am responsible for maintaining Daily Temperature Logs, which are required to provide a stable environment for the Investigational Product stored on site.
I coordinate re-calibration of all machinery used on site, set up required staff recertification/training for BLS/OSHA, monitor State Certification/Licensure (State of FL Biomedical Waste, CLIA, Hillsborough County Tax Renewal) requirements for the site.
I am also responsible for recruitment/screening of prospective patients. I have been cross-trained on EPIC and serve as back up for triage/assessment for our physician’s private psychiatric practice.
Richmond Nephrology Associates -- Richmond, VA January 2010 – October 2011
Clinical Coordinator RN
Responsible for coordinating clinical care for patients at three offices within Central Virginia (Richmond, Amelia
Courthouse, & Midlothian). Majority of patients diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease Stages II –V, Renal
Calculi, Secondary Hyperparathyroidism, Lupus, Glomerulonephritis, & Acute Renal Failure. I worked closely with
several dialysis centers, serving as liaison for patients with End-Stage Renal Disease, coordinating surgical
placement of AVF/Peritoneal Dialysis access sites; following patients through the transition phase into the dialysis
modality of their choice. Our clinical average: 20 stabilization/ follow up patients, with 4 new patients daily.
While our team of nurses helped provide coverage for six physicians at the main office, each physician was assigned
an RN to coordinate clinical visits. My designated physician, Daran Glenn, MD, was director for two DaVita sites,
rounding at five local dialysis centers, and six metro area hospitals. Hands on responsibilities included: Intake,
vitals, medication reconciliation, EPO administration (prn), venipuncture, Hepatitis B inoculation, TB skin test
administration, ongoing phone triage, coordination of Chronic Kidney Disease education classes, outpatient
EPO/Feraheme infusion, outpatient diagnostic testing (renal ultrasound, CT, MRI/MRA, venous Doppler,
octreoscans).Our office was paperless, primarily utilizing the ACUMEN EMR system; however, we were able to
access/utilize multiple computer systems for hospitals within the Richmond metro area.
