Research Experience
July 2017 to Endocytosis Project
May 2018 Eugene P. and Lois E. Trani Center for Life Sciences, Richmond, VA 23284
For this project I worked alongside VCU professor - Dr. Derek Prosser - with the goal of visualizing endocytosis within yeast cells. Vesicular transport has been widely studied, however current methods hinder our ability to quantify certain trafficking processes that take place within eukaryotic cells. This project involved the production of novel variants of the pH sensitive green fluorescent protein (GFP), known as pHluorin, in hope of creating a system that will allow for improved visualization and quantification of vesicular trafficking in yeast cells.
While this project is still in progress, it is estimated that by 2019 we shall release our paper with myself as a primary author and Dr. Prosser as Principal investigator.
July 2017 to Endocannabinoid project
May 2018 Hermes A. Kontos Medical Sciences Building, 1217 E. Marshall St, Richmond, VA, 23298
The endocannabinoid system is a neuromodulatory network that is the target for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a psychoactive component seen within marijuana. Specifically the G protein coupled receptors that are activated by this compound have been named Cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1) and Cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2). Within this project I worked with Dr. Aron Lichtman (VCU’s professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology) who assisted me in the process of exploring the opioid-sparing effects of various endocannabinoid derivatives. Via the use of the triad test, we were able to identify certain drugs involved in the stimulation of the CB1 receptor, which accounts for a large portion of the neurobehavioral components seen in THC, specifically analgesia. This project hopes to identify drugs that express analgesic effects without the other neurological components of THC stimulation. If successful, these drugs may provide potential alternatives to many of the opioid medications currently used within the field of medicine today.
July 2016 to Follistatin project
December 2016 Hermes A. Kontos Medical Sciences Building, 1217 E. Marshall St, Richmond, VA, 23298
I worked under an Orthopedic Surgeon – Dr. Satya Mallu – on a project that involved the implementation of Follistatin (FS-288) into the ipsilateral gastrocnemius muscles of Sprague Dawley rats three months after they had undergone dissection of their left hind limbs. This project was funded by the Department of Defense as a result of the large number of veterans within the military who have suffered musculoskeletal injuries, in particular to their extremities. By simulating similar injuries and replicating the time that soldiers have to wait before receiving surgical reinnervation, we could test the hypothesis that follistatin can maintain or increase muscle recovery and strength during periods of denervation. Additionally this experiment analyzed the extent to which follistatin affects nerve regeneration to see whether this growth factor could affect recovery rates and maintain nerve functionality throughout this extended period of time.
This project has been submitted and is currently undergoing review for publication.
