Joackim is an experienced and Fellow Chartered Accountant with more than 10 years experience in financial accounting and internal auditing gained from providing services to various clients in wide ranging industries. He has been with KPMG in Botswana for more than 8 years at different levels within the Advisory Department. Prior to joining KPMG in Botswana, Joackim was with KPMG in Zimbabwe for 4 years as a Senior Internal Auditor for 2 years and as an Accountant in the accounting advisory department for 2 years.

Professional and Industry Experience

Joackim is currently a Manager in the Advisory Services Unit. He maintains a primary responsibility in the preparation of annual financial statements for clients in various sectors of the firm in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles

(GAAP), including the computation of deferred taxation. Some of his current responsibilities include:

• Overseeing outsourced monthly management accounting and reporting for multiple clients in various industries including the set up of the same and facilitation of annual external audits;

• Preparing outsourced financial accounting and reporting structures of clients including setting up the chart of accounts, payment processes, working paper files, the reporting templates etc. This involves successful running of functions to ensure timely and accurate reporting;

• Providing training and capacity building to the Finance Function of clients. This includes optimisation of activities and appropriate support to the business in the form of business partnering and provision of timely and accurate information;

• Business process re-engineering including identifying weaknesses in clients’ accounting processes and recommending ways of improving or strengthening the same processes and assisting in the implementation of the recommendations;

• Reviewing financial and procurement policies and procedure manuals prepared by clients; and

• Lead risk-based internal audits.

• Insolvency projects – Joackim also assisted the Provisional Liquidator of a local company which held the sole Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) franchise in Botswana. His specific responsibilities under the management stream were overseeing the Finance and Administration and ICT activities.

• Assisting clients with implementation of computerised financial software systems to improve financial management.

He has also been seconded to clients in various financial positions to manage the financial function or support the heads of finance with financial systems and financial management. Joackim has experience in reviewing of the status of financial records and clearing outstanding transactions in subsidiary systems such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, property, plant and equipment, bank accounts, inventory, and tax accounts (General ledger reconciliations). He has used a number of reporting and accounting packages for month end reporting among them i.e. ERP Systems Application and Products - Financial Accounting and Controlling (SAP-FICO), SAP Strategy Enterprise Management

• Financial Reporting Consulting Manager: He currently manages the reporting process of a wholly - owned subsidiary of Germany's fifth-largest electricity producer operating in Botswana. The subsidiary has been contracted to undertake operational and maintenance services for Morupule B Power Station. He is responsible for the financial accounting and management aspects of the subsidiary, including meeting group reporting requirement and deadlines including:

• Advise and implement systems and procedures for internal control purposes;

• Review of monthly operating performance results against budgeted figures;

• Provide explanations variances in the income statement;

• Review of customers and suppliers age analysis;

• Review profit and cost centre reports and submission to Germany;

• Review monthly balance sheet reconciliations;

• Responsible for upload of the subsidiary monthly management accounts in the SAP consolidation module for consolidation reporting purposes;

• Responsible for upload and reconciliation of the subsidiary income tax and deferred taxation into the online Global Tax Centre for consolidation purposes;

• Liaising with BURS and bankers;

• Perform consolidation steps required for the subsidiary in the SAP consolidation module;

• Ensure that monthly payroll entries are booked into the system;

• Facilitate external and internal audits of the company;

• Ensure that the subsidiary complies with all tax regulations; and

• Responsible for supervision of other team members and talent development.

• Financial Reporting Consulting Manager: Joackim was seconded to one of Africa’s major financial services provider subsidiary in Botswana offering personal and business banking, credit cards, corporate and investment banking, wealth and investment management, and bancassurance to act as one of the Financial Reporting Managers performing analytical reviews of monthly management accounts packs, together with the Business Performance Managers, and provide commentary on variances per Business line within set deadlines. Some of his key responsibilities included;

• Review financial statements, financial reports, special data analysis, and ad hoc Information reports;

• Review monthly impairment adjustments from loans department;

• Performing key general ledger accounts and systems interface – SAP/BRAINS interface reconciliations for the Bank;

• Managing fixed assets;

• Review intercompany eliminations and reporting of internal balances to Group; Effectively monitor and apply control activities to ensure proper financial control and discipline within the cluster;

• Perform certain complex analyses to ensure P&L is correctly reported, the annual report is correctly disclosed and supplementary schedules are correctly completed;

• Assist with regulatory reporting with the central bank;

• Accounting for treasury products;

• Liaising with central processing unit regarding reconciliations of the entire bank’s network of Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) and Tellers cash holding balances;

• Facilitate external and internal audits of the bank; and

• Responsible for supervision and training of other team members and talent development.

• Finance Manager: He was also seconded to a subsidiary of a Japanese multinational corporation that manufactures construction, mining, and military equipment, as well as industrial equipment where he assisted with the implementation of SAP ERP system. Whilst there, he also performed the role of Finance Manager and Accountant overseeing the entire financial reporting and management processes. Some of his key responsibilities included;

• Monthly reviews of balance sheet and associated profit and loss accounts;

• Monthly variance analysis of branch and company wide expenditure;

• Generate month-end adjustments and accruals;

• Generate and submit certain monthly, quarterly and annual returns, reports to group;

• Perform general ledger account reconciliations, including investments on a monthly basis within specified deadlines;

• Review and monitor intercompany reconciliations;

• Maintenance of fixed assets in SAP;

• Ensure payroll journals are properly accounted for in SAP.

• Review Bank and petty cash reconciliations;

• Liaise with external stakeholders i.e. auditors and financial institutions;

• Calculation of VAT and ensure compliance with tax authorities;

• Recruit and retain finance staff;

• Attend and chai debtors and creditors periodic meetings;

• Prepare board meeting packs.

• Financial Reporting Consultant: He also assisted two of Botswana’s largest oil and gas companies

(British–Dutch & Singaporean owned subsidiaries) in various capacities performing: month-end close processes for stock, including review of stock counts results, and dips for all depots country wide. monthly variance analysis between margin reports and the Botswana price list. Both assignments involved continuous identification and advising on process improvements around fuel and lubricants stock holdings across the country’s state-owned strategic fuel reserve facilities.

• Financial Reporting Consultant: He assisted one of the country’s recognised leading reinsurance companies with parent listed on the Nigerian stock exchange to meet its annual reporting deadline through provision of technical support to the finance department, including reconciliations and preparation of financial statements and reports.

• Senior Internal Auditor: Joackim led an assignment to carry out an internal audit review of the Procurement and Stores functions of a company producing gold in Botswana with a holding company trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange Venture Board in Canada. The areas covered included the procurement and tendering processes, including inventory management of spares and materials. The assignment also involved assisting with the implementation of processes and procedures, including control for fuel and lubricants for the mine.

• Senior Internal Auditor: Joackim was also seconded to lead various internal audit assignments that covered functions under finance and operations at the country’s postal organisation.

• Finance and Administration Committee (voluntary Member): - Botswana Institute of Chartered Accountants (BICA). Some of the key terms of reference of the committee included:

• To oversee the monthly/quarterly management accounts reporting to Council monitor;

• Comparison of actual financial performance to budget, and monitoring the cash forecasts to facilitate decision making;

• Recommend budgets before presentation to Council and recommending different sources of income;

• Recommend the students and members’ fee structures for presentation to the annual general meeting;

• Recommend salary increases for staff to council;

• Oversee the preparation of year end financial statements for audit and the preparation of annual return.
