PROJECTS

Riverside Wildlife Rehabilitation Center Limpopo, South Africa

At Riverside I started off as a regular volunteer. My daily tasks included cleaning of animal enclosures, feeding preparation and then assisting with feedings, husbandry tasks which included raising a baby baboon. Other tasks included monitoring of the troop of baboons that was recently released. Later on they made me a lead which put me in charge of anywhere from 5-15 volunteers. My daily responsibilities increased, as well as retaining the old ones. There were some changes however. During enclosure cleaning I had to train new volunteers and instruct them on how to properly clean enclosures. I was in charge of food preparation and performed many of the feeds. I began helping in the veterinary clinic with the administration of medications and monitoring of health. I also had to learn the names and personalities of every baboon that I was directly responsible for which was 16 of them and then I had to train new volunteers on how to properly work with, handle, and be around the animals.

When I returned to Riverside a year later I was given the role of Senior Volunteer which was a level above the leads. My daily tasks remained the same however I worked more closely with the owners and veterinarian when it came to more advanced animal handling and medical procedures. I was also responsible for continuing to train new volunteers and make sure that they felt at home in South Africa.
