General Description of Assignment The incumbent serves as a Medical Support Assistant at the CTVHCS and performs a variety of support functions in connection with the care and treatment given to patients in all inpatient care in the medical center. The incumbents’ duties facilitate the work of physicians, physician assistants, nurses and other members of the medical team who provide direct inpatient care.
Functions or Scope of Assigned Duties: The MSA provides overall support for more or more multidisciplinary patient care units. Routinely and accurately prepares computerized medical records and necessary paperwork on all admissions discharges, etc. Ensures appointments and follow-up appointments are scheduled and maintained for patients as requested, using initiative and good judgment, and rescheduling appointments when necessary. Completes appropriate filing and scanning of documents accurately and timely.; explains necessary test preparations to patients; and records information such as date, type of exam, and procedures(s) required on appointment print outs. The MSA receives and triages consults, schedules initial and follow-up appointment, and tracks consults for serviced disciplines. The MSA coordinates the transfer of patients between wards, clinics, and transfers to other facilities as necessary, when a patient changes from inpatient to outpatient status. The MSA has the knowledge, skills and ability to perform these functions in all inpatient care locations, as this position requires rotation to a variety of inpatient settings to perform these duties.
The MSA ensures all necessary medical data (x-rays, lab reports, etc.) is available to clinicians prior to patients’ arrival and assists with keeping staff apprised of patient census and any changes/problems that might be encountered. The MSA is responsible for accurate and timely collection of patient information and demographics pertaining to scheduling/rescheduling, pre-registration, registration insurance verification, enrollment eligibility and means testing processes for the facility. The MSA assists in the completion of and processing of Release of Information requests. The MSA procures necessary data by interviewing veterans and their representatives as well as from reviewing official records.
Supervisory Controls the MSA’s supervisor sets priorities but allows the employee to organize recurring activities. The MSA must coordinate efforts to ensure all aspects of duties are accomplished efficiently, timely, and correctly. The MSA plans and carries out the day-to-day responsibilities of the unit independently utilizing initiative to resolve problems; the supervisor assists the MSA with unusual situations or problems that do not have clear precedents.
Performance is generally limited to review of overall results on daily end of tour reports, electronic messages, telephone contact, and face to face inaction with staff member’s to ensure the mission is carried out.
Qualification Requirements: VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G45.
Ability to operate computerized programs and databases in order to enter, modify and retrieve sensitive information/data into or from electronic medical records, scheduling systems and/or reports. Knowledge of basic medical terminology. Ability to make appointments in a clinical setting. Ability to work independently in the accomplishment of a wide variety of duties, including setting priorities and coordinating work. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.
Ability to identify customer’s concerns, perform the tasks required to resolve the issue accurately and timely, and follow-up as necessary to ensure a satisfactory resolution.

FCC homes offer high quality care provided by a military family member in both on-and off-post homes. FCC providers have extensive training and are regularly monitored and inspected by the FCC director and other CYSS staff. In addition on-post homes are inspected by post fire, safety, and preventive medicine these inspections are conducted to ensure that homes are maintained in a safe and sanitary manner providing the healthy, wholesome environment that the Army requires for your children.
FCC homes offer developmentally appropriate activities and guidance; follow child abuse prevention practices; undergo initial and annual background checks for the provider, the provider’s sponsor, and anyone in the home 12 years or older; and follow the USDA food program guidelines for providing healthy meals and snacks. FCC homes can provide additional services, such as extended hours and long-term care, to include overnights and weekends; transportation to and from school if required; before-and after-school care, and hourly and part-time care, in addition to regular full time care. A Family Child Care home can be an extension of your own family setting, and can individualize care to meet the special needs of your child. FCC homes take children from 6 weeks to 12 years of age, making it possible for all siblings to be cared for in the same home. This is especially advantageous during school vacations and half-days.
