I’m unique.

I have meaningful professional experience with large advertising/marketing organizations, and have achieved success there. But I really shine in more entreprenuerial settings... like in a small department of a large company or in a small business. I thrive on challenges, and I’m most comfortable in “hands-on” situations. It’s hard to assign me to any single pigeonhole, because I’m a classic multi-tasker...I can write a speech, create compelling copy, design a print ad, edit a written or photo submission, record a radio spot and direct a tv commercial, all in the same day. I still feel a tingle when I see my words in print or hear them over the air, and I get an equal rush when I see one of my designs come off a press. SUMMARY OF WORK EXPERIENCE

Marketing Coordinator, Beaufort County Community College, 2012 to present BCCC is a medium-sized community college that is part of the North Carolina Community College System. As the sole marketing professional, reporting directly to the college president, my responsibilities include all marketing functions for the institution, including program development, print and broadcast advertising and creation and development of catalogs and literature. This is a part time position due to budgetary constraints.

Selected Contributions

Developed a new brochure program designed to provide full color and in-house production. Refocused the advertising of the college to directly promote local community college benefits to prospective area students.

Implemented a focused broadcast advertising program of television and radio commercials and interview segments.

Launched a digital advertising program to operate alongside social media placements. Local Content Editor and Designer, Coastal Angler Magazine, 2010 to present Coastal Angler Magazine is a free fishing publication offered in regional editions throughout the US. As the initial owner of the Morehead region, my responsibilities included developing an editorial and advertising base for the publication, including creating and designing ads for the participating local and national advertisers. I sold my ownership stake to my associate in 2012, but still handle content for the Morehead and Wilmington editions.

President and Owner, Sumner Communications, Inc., 1988 – 2011 The company was a marketing and advertising company providing services to manufacturers of residential and contract furniture, as well as producers of other home-related products. As the principal of a small business, my responsibilities included all phases of the business, with primary emphasis on sales, client contact and graphics production.

Founded the company in 1988 to assist manufacturing companies in the marketing of their products to both consumer and trade customers.

Established relationships and handled assignments, both on a project basis and on a retainer basis, for some of the nation’s premier furniture and home interiors companies. Utilized efficiency and clarity of focus to help client companies and their sales forces achieve their product marketing goals while maintaining a low cost structure to enhance their profitability. Prior to 1988, I have held upper- and mid-level marketing communications positions for such leading home interiors companies as Stanley Furniture, Lexington Furniture, Bigelow Carpets, and Armstrong World Industries.
